Simple question for a dev to answer or anyone that reads a little more on the dev blogs

This is plain and simple. Will il-2 support voip, and if not, will modders be able to make a system like arma's taskforce radio. Or ACRE. in love with everything about the game. And saw in the boddenplatte announcement, a new chat and multiplayer system. Thanks for answering my question.

Jason was asked that during the last Q&A.

From the sounds of it, I don't think they have plans to implement a VOIP system. As with a lot of answers they give, it revolves around having a small team and there just not being the resources to do everything. I suspect VOIP would be very low down on the list.

TeamSpeak and Discord do a more than adequate job I think is the thinking. I don't know what ARMA and their Taskforce radio system is like but I'm sure its interesting.

Some aircraft in WWII didn't fly with the radio either so the silence is not always unusual :)

They would need to write it into the game engine. Right now there is no existing way to tie a 3rd party utility/application into the game (i.e. through tuneable radios or an existing VOIP system).

We could always try and lobby Jason to put a solution in. I'd be a big fan of the idea.

Hey guys thanks for such a quick response. I did kind of figure it would be low down on the list, but giving someone that has experience to do it would relive it from the devs all together. I just feel like it would be alot better then what we have right now. Its frustrating when you have a friendly near you, in his own world, watching you get ripped to shreds when nothings going on around him. Ive seen it time and time again. Its usually me bailing other ppl out.

Why is there a need or want for them to implement something like this, when there is Teamspeak, or Discord?

If its part of the game more people would use it, 90% of the time i go in a server that has a dedicated ts or discord its either empty or hardly anyone is on. Hell even if they made it like acre and u needed a plugin with ts3 id be happy.

The reason some games (DCS with SimpleRadio for example) made it easy to implement mods is because there was already a basic radio interface and a simulation of radio equipment in place. If they were to add this, to keep it within the standards of Il-2, they would ideally need to look into a few things:

  • some aircraft had radios, others didn't
  • many radios could only have frequencies tuned by the crew on the ground before flight
  • quality of sound based on equipment
  • ease of use based on equipment
  • damage model changed to include radios, both gradual and absolute
  • terrain obstruction
  • quality in function of distance
  • distortions and interference
  • how to incorporate this into the net code, with considerations for latency, packet loss, etc.

These aren't modern fancy radios where you can have 20 frequency presets and dial in a manual frequency with 100% accuracy on the go. Old airborne radios were, in their vast majority, equivalent to grandma's kitchen radio that needs 20 minutes to get onto the right frequency and could check out at any minute without previous warning. For the purpose of organised multiplayer they border on useless since you're either stuck with 20 other idiots talking over each other, or sitting alone with your one friend on that one frequency without being able to jump frequencies to help that flight of bombers getting mauled 3 minutes away. Better let people use TeamSpeak, Discord or whatever they like, it really changes little.

i wish there was a concept of a 'squad' in Il2. So far it's a manual process where you join the server and simply ask in chat if anyone is interested in flying together. Usually we find a willing person, however trying to organize a TS/dischord session after it is borderline impossible. People don't want to exchange ts/discord links, addresses, names.. since it takes time and not everyone is proficient or even have ts/dc installed..  The only possible squad option at this point is meet up on TS prior to server login and then join to play..

That's a good idea and maybe something that could be slotted under Jason's desire (and many of ours in the community) to upgrade the multiplayer interface in the long term.

Instead of squad it might be called 'Flight' but the call to various multiplayer fps games is obvious and a good idea.

We do need to get the voice thing going more often. I'm guilty of it too.

Even in titles where voice is built in, ala Battlefield 1 for example, people still don't use it all of the time or even frequently. It's a conscious effort.

If you're asking in chat to fly with other people you are doing it wrong. Jump into TS for the server you are in. People will either already be there or join as they get on. Those people want to fly with you.

For Wings of Liberty use the official BOS teamspeak. It's always the server 1 category. Connection info is on the forum.

TAW has it's own teamspeak. You can get it from their website.

Thanks for that, Shamrock.

I've been meaning to make an official thread for my Discord server, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

It's on the to-do list, along with some other fun things.

I; However, agree. Even on a server with an average of 100 people on at a time, getting a rando to fly with is next to impossible. It probably has something to do with the fact that being online, and talking in a text chat is a whole different thing than getting on voice chat with someone.

It's something I've caught myself doing, and it's something I've had happen to me. As sad as it is, it seems people simply can't get motivated enough to play with a stranger.

Of course that doesn't mean you should shy away from it either. It only takes one person to start something great. :P

Having Discord and team speak as only way for us to have comms is ok I suppose, the only problem I have with it is that there is not just one standard chat to join...

On discord everyone and their brother have their own channel. Yes there is an official il2 channel but I rarely see more then 2 persons. Teamspeak is pretty much the same. This is just from my experience of course..

An in game comm would be the best.

The way Squad has it is great. Especially with the marshalling or atc mode that is coming in the future. Having different in game channels would be so much more immersive then your ai self doing comms..

Yes I know not all aircraft had these radios, but even so, we still have the option to choose what side radio we are listening to, I think it’s ctrl-x or something.

Channel when at airfield,

Channel to team,

Channel to flight...

Ohh, it would be nice to have a flight/airfield you can join up and be dedicated to...

Ohhhh, and request transfer to other flight /airfield if you need to change...

Ok I’m coming up with too many ideas that are hurting my brain
