Cybermat47 Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 (edited) I was wondering, has anyone else here played the Star Wars flight sims that were released in the 90s, X-Wing and TIE Fighter? I’ve been playing TIE Fighter, and despite its age, it’s a superb game. The gameplay is very well done, and actually nakes you feel like you’re flying a “real” TIE. The layout and presentation of the missions makes you feel like you’re actually in a military unit in the SW galaxy, rather than some sad devotee to an ancient religion with a laser sword. Speaking of which, the story is actually pretty interesting, and it is awesome when you’re sharing your airspace (spacespace?) with characters like Darth Vader, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Emperor Palpatine. Barnacles Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I had them all, I even did a little multiplayer with X-Wing v TIE Fighter Battle of Hoth instead of Pacific anyone?
dburne Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Oh yeah most definitely, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter was great.
Tuesday Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I had them all, I even did a little multiplayer with X-Wing v TIE Fighter Battle of Hoth after Pacific anyone? FTFY I had X-Wing and I absolutely loved it. I'm always tempted to pick them all up on the Steam sales.
Trooper117 Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Played them all to death, in fact they are in boxes up in my attic I actually had more fun in X Wing Alliance though!
Fidelity Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Loved these games. Still haven't figured out why someone hasn't made a modern version.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Flight sims don't sell too well, and EA has dibs on all Star Wars videogames now. Supposedly Battlefront II has tried to incorporate something close to that in its space battles but I haven't tried it yet.
Finkeren Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 Loved especially X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter. That was back when the Star Wars franchise hadn’t yet been milked beyond all reason, and you’d actually get excited at the sight of a stormtrooper...
Cybermat47 Posted February 19, 2018 Author Posted February 19, 2018 That was back when the Star Wars franchise hadn’t yet been milked beyond all reason, and you’d actually get excited at the sight of a stormtrooper... Star Wars is now an endless nightmare that we will never wake up from, even when we die.
kestrel79 Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I played all of them. Great games. Incredibly difficult as well. Would love to see a modern update, maybe as VR becomes more of a thing big time publishers could get behind a cockpit only Starwars space sim once again. Battlefront 2's space missions do try to capture the feel of these games, however they don't 100% succeed. Still feels very arcady to me compared to the old games.
Pail Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I think it was this one I liked Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996, Nintendo 64) Nothing like tying up walkers in a snowspeeder..... http://www.starwars.com/news/the-best-star-wars-games-of-the-64-bit-era Just like flying an I-16....
Eclipse4349 Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 (edited) Flight sims don't sell too well, and EA has dibs on all Star Wars videogames now. Supposedly Battlefront II has tried to incorporate something close to that in its space battles but I haven't tried it yet. It's even more dumbed down that War Thunder with the most dumbed down settings possible, and the left stick control feels terrible (either roll or yaw, depending on your settings). It can be at least a little entertaining, but if you're looking for something Star Wars that is anything even remotely "sim", this isn't it! Edited February 19, 2018 by Eclipse4349
Trooper117 Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 The star fighter battles in Battlefront II has fantastic graphics, but that's it, apart from that it's utter arcade crap, I'd advise anyone not to waste their money. 4
kestrel79 Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 graphics and sound are very well done correct.
Fidelity Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) I'm gonna pretend someone didn't draw parallels between X-Wing or Tie-Fighter and Battlefront II. That should be classified as heresy. Edited February 20, 2018 by Fidelity
Vig Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) I loved those games. The B-Wing was my favorite. Taking out the shield towers of an Imperial Star Destroyer with guns and finishing it off with torps was sublime. Edited February 20, 2018 by Vig 1

I bought my first joystick in 1995 to play Tie Fighter on my father's computer (486DX2). Wrote down in a notebook all the hidden secondary/bonus goals and then started with a new pilot and played each mission until all the goals, including the hidden ones, were completed. Best game, ever.

Nah, Rebel Assault. Not a superb game. Oh, good old ‚CD-ROM‘ games. „7th Guest“ was my first of that kind, „Rebel Assault“ my second and last one. Made me not even going near those Star Wars simulation boxes anymore.
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 (edited) Sadly, ARMA 3 is the best modern Star Wars game. EA's products are nothing compared to the mods. Edited February 20, 2018 by Mitthrawnuruodo
Mmaruda Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Tie Fighter... Best... Damn... Game... In the genre! I can only wish IL-2 would have the same campaign structure at some point.
Trooper117 Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 There are quite a few simulator titles out there that got it right, had brilliant and engaging game play with a really good campaign system etc... why is it that more modern developers don't look at some of these and say, ''yes... we just need to make a more modern version of this'', without trying to reinvent the wheel each time?
1CGS Han Posted February 23, 2018 1CGS Posted February 23, 2018 TIE Fighter an Xwing vs TIE fighter - dosens of hours were spent with them)) Tau assault boat was my favorite craft)) 2

Pail Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 Does anyone remember this one... ....back when playing video games used to cost stupid amounts of coin.
Pail Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 (edited) yes a played it 5 months ago in a zx emulator, 3d made simplicity Wow I might even have to give that a go. It will be worth it just for the music. I'll get back to you when I run in to problems ....bound to happen really... Edited February 24, 2018 by Pail
J2_Trupobaw Posted February 25, 2018 Posted February 25, 2018 (edited) Tie Fighter was the best game ever made for me, even before the flight sims. Bought my first stick for it and keep it constantly installed and playable in some form since 1995 .I'm big fan of the interactive music system, too - the way the same melody was made more or less tensed by adding/removing instruments, and you greatly added to situation awareness - something that's not going to happen again. You can buy it here, by the way, along with rest of the series. https://www.gog.com/game/star_wars_tie_fighter_special_edition In case of X-wing and Tie Fighter, get the 1995 DoS CD version (not the last, Windows 95 one - the engine port was rather lacking).
