question about current sale and best module to buy

I have a friend who doesn't have any modules. I was wondering, for a newcomer, is the best module to buy first, still Battle of Stalingrad? Would that give him the most options when flying online? I'd like to make a recommendation. Thanks in advance

I would normally have said BoS, as it was the first of the series of maps. Plus it has a nice mix of planes with it.

However now having spent a lot of time in the Kuban map, it truly is spectacular. Still in Early Access, but very playable. Final release not too far away now.

Maybe have a look at the plane sets that come with both,  that might help your friend make a choice.

BoS is currently the best option for most MP servers, yes.

That said, regardless of what you buy, all maps are playable in MP even if you only buy one set.

For example: if your friend buys BoS they could play on the Moscow, Kuban, and Stalingrad maps in multiplayer. To clarify, that's as long as the server includes aircraft you own. e.g. a 109 F-4 on the Moscow map.

Battle of Kuban is releasing Q1 2018 so.....soon. Just FYI.

Moscow aircraft like the BF 110 and MiG-3 are something I personally couldn't imagine playing without though. But that's just me.

I would have him take a look at the plane sets for each and buy whichever installment appeals to him the most. As others have said, he will still be able to play on any map in multiplayer, as long as the mission uses a plane he owns. If there are any AI planes, whether in single or multiplayer, they can fly anything, whether he owns it or not. The devs have done well to not splinter the community based on what is owned or not owned.

Also, all improvements and additional features and content apply to every module - they are all the same "sandbox". The only difference is which planes you can fly, and what maps and campaigns are available to you in single player.

By the way, do you fly with FrozenLiquidity? I see the FFS tag. He's a good guy, I was flying with him a couple weekends ago on Discord.

BoS covers most maps but on things like TAW & Finnish there will be a couple of maps at the beginning he cannot fly.  They usually only last about a week before the BoS aircraft kick in but if he flys Allied then he can always buy a P40 to fly in the second map onwards.  I think the MC202 does the same for Axis fliers.   I believe he can play the later maps using the Lagg-3

Hi! This is my situation - I'm new to IL-2 and I want to grab a module during this sale. I am less concerned with multiplayer and more concerned with the offline campaign. Is there a consensus on which campaign is the most interesting?

Thanks!

Also, I was wondering about CoD BLITZ - is that a robust singleplayer option?

The stock campaign is being updated for all of the "battle of ***** " series. They will be available for the entire eastern front trilogy with the release of Battle of Kuban in the coming days / weeks. The new career mode should be a lot of fun, with even more mission types scheduled to be integrated in the early months after release.

With the Career mode taking over the old Campaign system I think you're going to find they all have really interesting campaign options.

I'd suggest picking then based on your interest in the aircraft lineup. Both Moscow and Stalingrad are inexpensive right now with the sale on and then really it just falls to what aircraft do you want to fly. IMHO while its hard for me to choose... Moscow Autumn is my second favourite map to fly over right now. Kuban is first by a long shot though :)

Is he more of a singleplayer or multiplayer guy? If multiplayer I would certainly choose BoS. For singleplayer it really depends on what kind of planes or theater he could find interest in. Personally from the planeset and theater I would have chosen BoM first (as a SP guy) as it has a lot of unique planes and the map is nicer than Stalingrad IMO. (lots of different forrests and rivers - flying low there is a dream)

Thanks for the responses!

It's sounding like Moscow is the right module for me :) Question about the new career mode - will it render the campaign modules (like Ten Days of Autumn) obsolete? Or will you still have to purchase that content separately?

I will buy Ten Days of Autumn, too, if it's still going to be a separate purchase I have to make later.

The new career mode will be along the lines of the dynamic campaign in RoF. Scripted campaigns will still be relevant and in no way obsolete.

If money is no object, I'd recommend Kuban. The map is so beautiful and interesting, both in its own right and compared to BoS and BoM. I also think the plane set is really inspired. You're getting improved versions of the BF-109, Yak, Sturmovik, and BF-110. You get the FW-190 in the base game. Plus exciting new planes like the A-20, P-39, Spitfire, and the HS-129.

I normally do not spend $60 on a game, much less $70, but the desire to buy Kuban is tormenting me!

Check PWCG.  With the Stalingrad plane set you can fly through much of Moscow and Kuban battles as well as all of Stalingrad.  Your only issues will be the last part of 1941 and later in 1943.
