dburne Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 Ok so I am sure probably not PWCG related, but am posting it here anyway as I am only flying PWCG and really did not start seeing much this behavior by the enemy 109's until my Kuban Spit campaign. I always really struggle against the 190's in Kuban, as my Spit just can not keep up with their constant boom and zoom tactics. At least I think that is what it is called, the climb like all get out then turn and dive toward me. I can not keep up with their climb, and I can not outrun their dive. Typically I am toast unless I can get quickly down to the deck where they struggle, oftentimes they crash into the ground down low. More recently I am seeing 109's now using this same dang tactic, booming and zooming and I struggle with them as well. I do not recall them doing this so much previously, but now they are all over it like stink on you know what. Maybe it is a different version of the 109 they are using in Kuban? Maybe they recently partied with the 190 pilots who gave them some tips on doing this? I have reduced Max Fighter Flights per Side: Fighter Campaigns to 1. ( default was 3) to try and minimize the number of fighters I come across and hopefully see more bomber enemy ai, which I am most successful with in the Spit. The above happened in my first mission of my second Spit campaign I created. So anyway, just curious as to others thoughts on these 109's tactics I am seeing now? Or if you have any tips on how I can successfully engage these dastardly fliers that would be appreciated as well. Hoping as I go forward I will see more bombers than these guys, but I dang sure would like to be able to at least hold my own a little against them.
Trooper117 Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 You will struggle in your Mk V Spit against a 190 that has height advantage using those tactics (just as Spit pilots in their Mk V's did when they met them for real) As for 109's, I've managed to hold my own against them whatever tactics they have employed. (so far) I have found though, even when I am not flight leader, they will always home in on me, and not the other friendly AI in my flight... it always seems that I am the priority target. It gets tiresome... I guess it's just something in the AI that needs a re-work.
PatrickAWlson Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 That is AI, but I have found that letting my squadron mates go first helps. The AI definitely does not lock on the player, but it definitely does lock on to somebody based on criteria unknown to me. If that somebody is the AI they lock every bit as hard as they would if they picked you.
Stlg13/Sgt_Schultz Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 If that somebody is the AI they lock every bit as hard as they would if they picked you. +1 to that. It used to be that the ai seemed mostly to hone in on me, but more and more now I see them doing it to my poor wingmen. All the while being oblivious to everything else, including your tracers. What the ai lacks in skill it certainly makes up for in tenacity .
dburne Posted February 15, 2018 Author Posted February 15, 2018 (edited) Ok thanks gang, will try and let my wingmen start the engagement. When I come across them , typically they are already at a fair height advantage to us and then they start that boom and zooming crap. I just don't remember the 109's doing that so much previously, seemed like they were more turn fighters then. Not the case now it seems. Edited February 15, 2018 by dburne
