Porkins Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I wonder if the devs will add photography missions with BoK? As I'm sure everyone on these forums knows, recon/photo missions were an important part of an air force's job. It would be cool to strip down your BF-110 or PE-2 and fit it with a camera. Then try to fly into enemy territory, take some pics, then fly back to safety to deliver your pics.
Ribbon Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 (edited) Loved that missions in RoF, would love to see them in il2! Edited February 12, 2018 by EAF_Ribbon
Feathered_IV Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I hope so. The ones in Rise of Flight were pretty basic however. Just fly in a straight line and click on an icon that appears on your HUD. Then fly home and receive no points or credit for your efforts. It did not offer much in the way of realism or immersion. Now that we have a new engine and time period, I think there is much more scope for improvement. You could have low-level oblique missions as well as the much higher straight and level stuff. Toggling automatic cameras on and off at precise points during a run to ensure success, rather than clicking the top of your screen and looking anywhere but down. Or having an AI crew member call out when the photos are being taken, if they are successful, and when they are completed.
Finkeren Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I’m sure it’s planned as part of the 40 missions type in career. I doubt that it will be part of the 3.001 version of career mode though. It will most likely be added later.

Rjel Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Did anyone say Bf 109G-8? You can see almost as far as a 109 can fly. How about a challenge and do a longer ranging PR Spitfire, Lightning or F6 Mustang?
=gRiJ=Roman- Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I wish we had a list of the mission types ...
SqueakyS Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I think a Hurricane would be a great recon plane.
Finkeren Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I think a Hurricane would be a great recon plane. I really don’t think it was. I know they converted someMk Is and IIs to PR, but were there ever any purpose built PR Hurricanes? Seems to me that they would’ve been too slow to make good recon planes.
Porkins Posted February 12, 2018 Author Posted February 12, 2018 (edited) What got me thinking about this recently was watching a documentary on the P-38. Apparently it was very popular as a recon/photo plane. Fast as hell, and plenty of room for cameras. The narrator of the documentary made a bold claim, that the camera in the P-38 probably saved more lives (by providing intel) than any other weapon system the plane carried. Sounds plausible. Then again it may just have been the narrator's British accent. Edited February 12, 2018 by Porkins

The Spitfire and the Mosquito both had multiple specialised photo-recon variants, and are probably the most iconic photo-recon aircraft at least on the allied side. Could be added to a Spitfire by modding in a D wing which had no armament, a downwards-facing camera each side andvwas full of fuel, and I'm still hoping that a Mosquito might be added to BoBo at some point as a collector plane.
