SpaceX Falcon Heavy Launch

I just watched the launch of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket with Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster aboard, bound for Mars. It will orbit between Earth and Mars forever.

After the launch, they opened the payload fairings and cut to a shot looking out the cockpit of the Tesla into space, with David Bowie's Life on Mars playing in the background. Then they showed the two side boosters of the rocket landing at the same time at the Kennedy Space Center.

How cool is that!

Cheers!

Watched it live too.

That was really epic, I barely touched my beer from liftoff up to the boosters landing !

Waiting to know about the status on the drone ship !

Me too. I could not believe the precision of those two boosters making a synchronised landing on their tails side by side  :o:

The center core did not make it back :-(

What's impressed me the most about these boosters is that they both have their own flight calculation systems, and yet, once their fliping is done, all in-flight correction with the RCS thrusters are simultaneous. I think the program they build achieved a high maturity level. But the twin landing was mindblowing nonetheless !

Not sure about the center core, it is not quite clear if they speak about having lost the thing or having lost all coms with the thing. I'm going to wait for an official com from SpaceX

Good time to alive to see both land simultaneously. Best 10 seconds of the decade.

Loss confirmed

Elon Musk said on a conference call with reporters that the launch "seems to have gone as well as one could have hoped with the exception of center core. The center core obviously didn't land on the drone ship" and he said that "we're looking at the issue." Musk says that the igniter ran out of fuel, so the center engine lit, but the two outers did not., which kept the core from being able to slow down as much as it needed for landing. Because of that, the core apparently hit the water at 300MPH, and it was about 100 meters from the ship. "It was enough to take out two thrusters and shower the deck with shrapnel," Musk said. That should be worth seeing on video: "We have the video," Musk confirmed, "it sounds like some pretty fun footage... if the cameras didn't get blown up as well."

I find it freaking awesome that that car will be up there long after we've all turned to dust. David Bowie on an endless loop playing to the stars maybe long after the human race ceases to exist. Outstanding

At least he put a message on the circuit boards saying where it was made. "Made on Earth by Humans". Earth may be run by self-cloning crayfish by then any way. http://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/05/science/mutant-crayfish-clones-europe.html
