Hi!

Who can explain this BoX function to me?

In multipayer mode I select a base and instead of choosing a plane I press "Spectate". After that I find myself somewhere in the countryside and sometimes I can look around (F11) - nothing else. Nothing than that is to be seen.
Does anybody know how to set the camera position in order to see something of interest?

Regards, Michael

I assume servers have that ability disabled to prevent spying. Perhaps someone in-the-know can confirm my assumption.

The server admin can enable or disable an "Allow spectator" option.

The mission builder can set up cameras that provide spectator views for each side or both sides. If cameras are set up, spectators can access these views with F12 and press F11 to look around using their mouse.

I believe that the "somewhere in the countryside" view is a default camera in the middle of any map.

That's all I know about spectators so far. I've played around a lot with cameras but many of the features either did not work properly or remain a mystery to me. I documented the basic camera view setup in "Create Views That a Mission Participant Can See", on pg. 53 of the mission editor manual.

Thanks guys, that's a good start. I'll see what else I can find out.

In some ways, apart from the difficulty spawning in that sometimes occurs, the spectate option is good to go to to know what skin to use or see the player list to see which side Needs You !

...Do you think I used the word to too often too ? Toot !

Sometimes it is interesting to spectate on Normal servers using F5/F2 ground/air and shift/control?/F2 to switch between aircraft, sometimes you need to mash F5 until in vicinity of aircraft as it changes between nearest units

quick way to check out a new map or aircraft if you do not have time to 'fly properly' also can give a new perspective on many game elements/units

Even on expert servers it would be useful if they was a  'Spectate' view for each friendly field to allow you to take a slightly higher viewpoint, maybe up the control tower,  to see how the field is laid out.  In reality pilots did not wake up in the cockpit of a plane on an unfamiliar airfield and have to guess which way to taxi or take out their binoculars and hope they can see some clue.  Having a low-res map with an approximate location of where they may have spawned does not help either especially as it is possible to have two or more spawn areas in different parts of the map or what looks like a likely take-off direction has low objects ready to rip off your undercarriage that were not visible when you started the run.

Besides, purely for fun it would be nice if you could land and despawn but still watch your squadmates come home.
