[I./JG62]steppa Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 Hello! Does anybody have good sources (pictures, videos, drawings, text, etc.) about late war german aircraft camo and is willing to share it? Something along the lines of: Did colours(composition,gloss,...) change? Which patterns were common? Were there different "styles"? How was the camo applied? Was it common to "mismatch" a hood or a tailfin after repairs? Was it common to not paint parts at all? Did colours varry from manufactor to manufactor? Maybe this thread could help people determining what bodenplatte ac they are looking at, what to expect or just inspire some of our great skinner. Thanks in advance Blessings!
Wolfram-Harms Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 (edited) Just google for "Bf 109 G or K Reichsverteidigung" for example (or Focke-Wulf 190 D-9 or other), and you will get good examples. Here is a profile from "Adlerhorst Hangar"/Intruder 59. The fighters for the "Reichsverteidigung" (Defense of the Reich) had several different fuselage color band (see link below). New RLM colors were introduced for the "final stage" of the war (RLM 80 - 83, and a new "eggshell" sky tone for undersides). But it is tricky with colors of the Luftwaffe already (several researchers all present us different tones), and in the last two years, the supplies got so short, that the production wasn't so strictly nailed down to exact colors. Allowances were made, to mix colors, etc. So it is almost impossible to tell, how the late war aircraft really looked. But here is a nice source for a lot of info: https://www.asisbiz.com/Battles/camouflage.html Edited January 30, 2018 by Wolfram-Harms
Wolfram-Harms Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 (edited) Scharfi, is that a Bulgarian Bf 109 (the guys are wearing caps which don't seem to be German)? Interesting to see, that German planes were also painted with "shark jaws" - not only P-40s. And it fits the 109 quite well - she appears like a deadly shark anyway. MeoW.Scharfi Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 (edited) It's a swiss Bf 109 E3, they had a few. I like this Bf 109 K4 camo as well! Edited January 30, 2018 by MeoW.Scharfi
[I./JG62]steppa Posted January 31, 2018 Author Posted January 31, 2018 (edited) I found this webpage ( http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/luftcamdb_3.htm ) which mentioned these: February 23, 1945 Oberflächenschutzliste 8 Os 262A: Released by Messerschmitt and approved by the RLM, this document designating the 'green' 81/82/76 camouflage scheme to be applied to the Me 262A. The colours are described in the plans/document as "Braunviolett 81" and "Hellgrün 82" (Merrick and Hitchcock, 1980, p.47; Smith and Creek, 1983b, p.20; Radinger and Schick, 1993, p.110). October 1944 Oberflächenschutzliste 8 Os 109K: This was released by Messerschmitt and approved by the RLM, designating the 74/75/76 camouflage scheme to be applied to the Bf 109K (Hitchcock, 1979, p.18-19). September 1944 Factory Camouflage Directive, Fw 190 A: It is most probable that this document or a related order (possibly a document only and not an Oberflächenschutzliste), existed in some form and specified the 75/83 scheme for the Fw 190 D-9 as well (see above comments). August 15, 1944 Sammelmitteilung Nr. 2: This document was officially issued on this date and contained the following paragraphs (Smith and Gallaspy, 1977, pp.96, 125, 129): The temporary day finish 7126.76 is introduced to replace 7126.65. The new blue finish will be used to re-camouflage aircraft in permanent night finish for daylight missions. Insignia will not be overpainted. The use of masking tape will be necessary, as the finish will be applied by brush. Note: 7126.76 is intended primarily for use at the unit level. Camouflage colours and their application to aircraft have lately been entirely revised. Firms producing camouflage charts will receive from Erprobungsstelle Travemuende a camouflage atlas containing all the necessary information. With the publication of this atlas, it is forbidden to use any other colour shades and schemes, including special requests from operational units without the express permission of E-Stelle Travemuende. What are these, and were they followed by the manufactors/units? On a second thought, are there any publications which are a must-read to start informing myself about this topic? thanks Scharfi and Wolf for the material. Blessings! Ps: just waiting for the G6 to finally come to my hangar Edited January 31, 2018 by [I./JG62]steppa 1
Wolfram-Harms Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 (edited) Steppa, you may find the most in the link I posted. RLM 74/75/76 was a common fighter camouflage since 1943. RLM 81/RLM 82 were late-war camo colors. You can find several publications on German Luftwaffe Colors - but they all differ from each other. The ASISBIZ link will show you a comparison of the research tones - but you will still have to decide, who's colors you want to trust most. Wow - the Swiss Bf 109 looks great, Scharfi! That Bf 109 K-4 had a camouflage of RLM 81 Braunviolett and RLM 82 Dunkelgrün (I think). Undersides were possibly in the late war "eggshell" sky tone. I also like the G-10 or the K-4 for they "good looks"! And the Erla-Haube ("Galland-Haube") is a great improvement anyway! Here is the EADS Heritage Bf 109 - colors must be RLM 74 Graugrün and RLM 75 Grauviolett. Edited January 31, 2018 by Wolfram-Harms
