What is this?

I see a lot of these. They look to be too small to be control towers. There's never any personel around them (or vehicles) and sometimes there are three or more along both sides of a runway.

It's a control tower.

It's a lifeguard lookout.

It's an Ostrich coop so that if they run out of bombs then they can use Ostrich eggs instead.

Airfields back then were often very rough and ready sort of things, cobbled together on short notice by the army engineers. Can't expect much in the way of lavish offices for ATC, and probably don't need more either.

No idea why there are several tower. might be a kind of "security-thinking" to have substitute towers...

Judging from old photos, the German control towers in field wereoften mobile carts of 3-4m height pulled by trucks / halftracks. 

 

 

 

For a fully fledged airport, of course there may have been different ones. But most were field operations, airports with hangars towers and more weren't so common.

On Small Airfields a Tower doesn't have to be that big at all.

And sometimes a control tower, is just a man armed with a radio in the open field . I know that DAT (Danish Air Transport) tried that one in Africa, a few years ago.

I'm hoping when we have marshal option, you'll be able to sit up there with binocs and a light gun or flares

And perhaps a private chanel on comms to tower

I know it's not going to happen but *cough* integrated comms *cough*
