Hauksbee Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I see a lot of these. They look to be too small to be control towers. There's never any personel around them (or vehicles) and sometimes there are three or more along both sides of a runway.
Lensman Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 It's an Ostrich coop so that if they run out of bombs then they can use Ostrich eggs instead.
=X51=VC_ Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 They look to be too small to be control towers Airfields back then were often very rough and ready sort of things, cobbled together on short notice by the army engineers. Can't expect much in the way of lavish offices for ATC, and probably don't need more either.
Wolfram-Harms Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 ...sometimes there are three or more along both sides of a runway. Hauksbee, my friend! Olham here! So you "trespassed" from WOFF into the WW2 combat zone? Hearty greetings from Berlin, old boy! No idea why there are several tower. might be a kind of "security-thinking" to have substitute towers...
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 (edited) Judging from old photos, the German control towers in field wereoften mobile carts of 3-4m height pulled by trucks / halftracks. For a fully fledged airport, of course there may have been different ones. But most were field operations, airports with hangars towers and more weren't so common. 6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 On Small Airfields a Tower doesn't have to be that big at all.
6./ZG26_Loke Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 (edited) And sometimes a control tower, is just a man armed with a radio in the open field . I know that DAT (Danish Air Transport) tried that one in Africa, a few years ago. Edited January 27, 2018 by 6./ZG26_Loke 1
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 For us it's normally a Guy in a Car with a Hand Held.
Wolfram-Harms Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Thx guys - never seen "mobile towers" before! The Germans seem to have been well prepared to move around a lot, like Richthofen's "Flying Circus" - first fast forward "Blitzkrieg", and later on an orderly retreat...
[APAF]VR_Spartan85 Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I'm hoping when we have marshal option, you'll be able to sit up there with binocs and a light gun or flares And perhaps a private chanel on comms to tower I know it's not going to happen but *cough* integrated comms *cough* Especially once we finally get into carrier ops in the future..... *sigh* this sim rocks
[N.O.G.F]_Cathal_Brugha Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Is that the bicycle they use to tow the tower?
