Rjel Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 (edited) I think my current favorite is Gareth Hector. The third painting with the 78th FG Mustangs really stokes my imagination in anticipation of the P-51 coming to BoX soon. I can almost hear the roar of those mighty Merlins overshadowed by the drone of hundreds of Wright Cyclone radials. Edited January 27, 2018 by Rjel 3
Pail Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Me being a sentimental bugger likes the old paintings generally by servicemen or official artists (or propagandists) of the time... Ships That Fly by Colin Colahan https://rantfoundry.wordpress.com/2016/02/02/ships-that-fly-colin-colahan/ Ju88 by Hans Liska http://artcontrarian.blogspot.com.au/2014/07/hans-liska-equally-good-drawing-people.html http://www.allworldwars.com/World%20War%20II%20Sketches%20By%20Hans%20Liska.html Hans Liska And of course the Tatsinskaya Airfield Raid Mural which I used to have a great panoramic picture of but i can't find because Pinterest wrecked the internet of images... 5
I/JG27_Zimmi Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 There are many talented (3D) artits out there with their own uniqe way to arrange a scene. I pretty much like Gareth Hector's work, but also-if we stay in the community-rOEN911. No idea what's the situation with Wiek Luijken (http://www.luijken.com), but in the past (irrc part of aviation arthouse) we created some awesome images we well. One of my favorites at the moment (which was also pointed out in the forums here) is https://de-de.facebook.com/romainhugault/
Feathered_IV Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I quite like some of Michael Turner's work, in a Roy Cross sort of way. Some aviation "artists" however are better left to those discounted calendars you find in plastic tubs outside your local newsagent. Nicolas Trudgian for example... Worst compositions ever.
Uufflakke Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 Me being a sentimental bugger likes the old paintings generally by servicemen or official artists (or propagandists) of the time... Exactly my opinion. While reading your comment I had to think of the work by Hans Liska. When I scrolled down a bit there are his drawings. Nowadays aviation artists sit at their desk creating and copy-pasting parts of images on their high end computers. With a cup of coffee next to them. A big difference compared to the ones who actually were witness of war. This could be the reason that planes created by modern artists look so pristine and shiny with these cinematic explosions all over the place. Sometimes it feels more like an airshow or racing contest then a fight to survive. To each his own taste. 1
Pail Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 (edited) A big difference compared to the ones who actually were witness of war. I had in mind these books but apart from the flying boats painting I had trouble finding pictures from them on the net or ones that I could use here. I have them but not in as good condition as these ones look. Edited January 27, 2018 by Pail
Uufflakke Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 @Pail, At SAS1946 there is a similar topic called 'The Art of Flight'. Which lots of aviation related drawings, paintings, computer art, 3D museum objects etc. Unfortunately I can not link to it since SAS1946 has a server issue at this very moment. 1
Lusekofte Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 I find those in the airfix/ Tamia model boxes pretty damn good
Rjel Posted January 27, 2018 Author Posted January 27, 2018 ALL aviation art is too perfect as to seem legit come on photography is now 200 years old oh and thanks a lot for the compliment that may boost me up to make some new comic about the immortal vs the undead or something really crazy Thx Finkeren. This thread is shot to Hell now.
Pail Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 propaganda wwii on the other hand was art i'm glad we agree
SCG_Tzigy Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Harley Copic Something about his art.. really atmospheric..
Rolling_Thunder Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Harley Copic Something about his art.. really atmospheric.. That looks like tempests invading a xmas card. 1
jarg1 Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I don't know about favorite artist but I will always remember first seeing this print by Barrie Clark at the Smithsonian when I was much younger.
Feathered_IV Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 I had a feeling I knew what you meant so I looked him up and yes I agree, artists that feel the need or example to squash in a steaming locomotive for good measure. Also available as decorative plates from daily newspapers. OMG yes, how could I forget about the plates. Also the cliché of "three-quarter frontal view and burning aircraft peeling off to the left (or right)" is alive and well too.
Rjel Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 Also the cliché of "three-quarter frontal view and burning aircraft peeling off to the left (or right)" is alive and well too. There's only so many ways to capture the essence of any vehicle. "Three quarter frontal" always does that for me. I think it represents the power of the machine at its best.
6./ZG26_Custard Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Robert Taylor. Although there are no doubt other artists out there that may have more technical skill, I really like his oil on canvas renditions most of all. 1
Rjel Posted January 28, 2018 Author Posted January 28, 2018 Those Malcolm Hoods One of my favorite artists is Rikyu Watanabe...beautiful illustrations for WW2 aircraft books. Me too. I have several books he's illustrated. Excellent profiles and 3-views. 1
Uufflakke Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 (edited) I don't know if it aviation art as what people might expect of it but it is about planes during WWI/WWII. The creator is Charles Pears. A GERMAN SEARCHLIGHT ACROSS THE CHANNEL STRAFED BY A GERMAN SEAPLANE OFF TERSCHELLING Edited January 28, 2018 by Uufflakke 1

Feathered_IV Posted January 28, 2018 Posted January 28, 2018 Nice one Ufflakke! I was going to mention Charles Pears myself
