Beast Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 Like the topic says, I'm looking to buy IL-2 for my Rift and I want to know if there are any pro/cons of buying BoS and BoM (and BoK etc) from steam vs here. The game uses OpenVR right? So does it matter if it's launched from Steam (from a VR perspective). Also, what if you have all the DLC, what is a 'nicer' way to manage the game - IL2 launcher or Steam? Does either version make modding easier/harder? Does the OTT work with either version the same? Thanks guys (OLD IL-2 player here from 2002/2003 era but it's been a long time between vodkas!)
dburne Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 (edited) Welcome to the forums! It does not matter, you will need Steam/Steam VR to run this game in your Rift, however I would suggest purchasing direct from 1CGS so the developers get full benefit of the funds. Plus you can participate in pre-order early access periods should you choose. Once you have Steam/Steam VR installed, when you launch IL-2 it will launch Steam VR for you and you will be flying in the Rift ( of course after checking VR option in settings menu). No need to launch the regular Steam to do this. OTT works just fine, of course you can also make those settings in Steam VR. I myself prefer to use the OTT beings how my device is an Oculus device. Just personal preference from my end. You might have a look at this thread I did earlier last year for some tips as well: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/30119-tips-new-rift-owners/ Edited January 23, 2018 by dburne
BeastyBaiter Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 If you buy from this site, all the money goes to the game developers and you don't have to run steam in the background. You still have to install steamVR though to play in VR. After purchasing a released content pack, you can then buy and use early access content too. If you buy from steam, 30% of your money goes to steam and you must run steam in the background in addition to steamVR. You will not have the option to buy additional content until it is officially released. Both versions use the same client version and so multiplayer is exactly the same on both. The only meaningful difference is those with a direct purchase can use partially released content, such as Battle of Kuban aircraft if they have purchased them. Steam users cannot do this until the pack is released on steam.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 You don't need to run steam in the background if you buy via steam. But, I still recommend buying it from the page. More to the devs.
