Pail Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) Great photos. I wish I had access to my Grandfather's photos of the airfields around Milne Bay (not that any that I remember where that spectacular or professional). For a while I had his military maps of the area too, and his courts martial paperwork. They were a bit like reading Catch-22 or something along those lines. It was winning the war on mosquitoes that killed him though.. Edited January 22, 2018 by Pail
PatCartier Posted January 23, 2018 Author Posted January 23, 2018 He was soldier in infrantry or other thing ?

Pail Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 (edited) He was soldier in infrantry or other thing ? 2/27th Battalion (Australia) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2/27th_Battalion_(Australia) Edited January 23, 2018 by Pail
Pail Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 These are not his photos but they are things he took photos of.
Feathered_IV Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 Hmm, my boss' grandfather was in the 27th as well. She mentioned it the other day, as she's trying to source a copy of the Battalion's official history.
Pail Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 Hmm, my boss' grandfather was in the 27th as well. There was two so it's a bit confusing (the 27th and 2/27th) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2/27th_Battalion_(Australia) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/27th_Battalion_(Australia) The story goes that my Grandpa (named Caryl) enlisted, underage and during training they were doing the "What to do if a guy with a bayonet on his gun charges at you". The training officer picked out Caryl to demonstrate and because (it is assumed) that he appeared to not be paying attention he thought he would reinforce the training method by removing the scabbard from the bayonet and charged at my grandpa. Caryl grabbed the gun off the guy and stabbed the training sergeant straight through the thigh. This incident resulted in much punishment duties and promotion to a training position. He also guarded internment camps for Italians and Germans whom he liked and maintained contact with some after the war. I'm pretty sure he fought some Americans though.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brisbane This meant he didn't get deployed to new Guinea until after some of the most famous actions this unit was involved in. There was still fighting going on but the Japanese offensive was fairly much broken. These are of course 'family stories' which are not always entirely factual. I was trying to put some of the photos from our state libraries here but the photo viewer extension doesn't let me. Nevermind, they were mostly examples of the kind of not incredibly exciting photos i remember of my Grandpas.
Pail Posted January 24, 2018 Posted January 24, 2018 The other funny thing is my Grandma's first son was born in 1944 to Caryl but years after his death she had the photo of another guy on the book shelf (next to the picture of the Pope) who was a sailor who went down with the HMAS Sydney. That stayed on the bookshelf behind the door in the lounge room til her death. You could only assume that he was her 'true love'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Sydney_(D48)

Pail Posted January 27, 2018 Posted January 27, 2018 (edited) Strangely enough if you search "pimping Lizzie aircraft" google comes up with lots of pictures of the new British aircraft carrier.... ...or is it Limping Lizzie ? Is "Limping" https://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/p-38/41-2156.html Edited January 27, 2018 by Pail 1

Feathered_IV Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 Great stuff. I can't even begin to estimate how many hours I've lost to browsing Fold3 over the years. It's probably the best resource of USAAF photos on the net.
PatCartier Posted February 2, 2018 Author Posted February 2, 2018 (edited) it's very addictive indeed Edited February 2, 2018 by PatCartier
