Aircraft Identification Screenshots

I found this on a youtube video and decided to do some snaps and post them for those who are interested. It really helped me last night just by looking at the tail section and elevators. There are very distinct differences even from long distance if you can see the top or bottom of the aircraft. Thought this might help some of you.

I also find that even when you are just too far away to see the wingshapes clearly,  you can often tell them apart from the 'sit' of the wings eg the 109s & 190s have more fuselage between the tailplane and mainplane.   Take this short video I made yesterday

At 40 seconds I zoom in to see what the contact is but there are just not enough pixels yet to show the wing shape. Nevertheless I was quite certain at this point that I was not looking at a 190 or 109 just by the proportions.  I could not have said whether it was a La-5 Lagg-3 or Yak at that point  nor could I have put in words why I thought it was Russian but I am sure many people get that same unconscious feeling.    That does not mean that I have not got within gun-range of a fighter  and still been unsure whether to open fire or not :-)   If you don't see a plan view it can be very tricky.

Yep it is veryyyyy hard when they are far away. I now look at 2 main areas if I can see them. wings and stabilizer. If I cant tell with either of those I dont engage and get altitude and try for an overhead look.

The biggest mistake I made there was not the overexcited shooting or being too close, it was that high G turn I made after losing my engine. I started my turn with 520 on the clock and finished with 300! I might have made it all the way home had I been more sensible. As it was I barely reached land and put down on a road despite keeping it at 300kph which is best glide speed as far as I am aware.

Why did you post that? :-)    If anyone is wondering,  that is the comment I posted on my video.

need image of MC.202.   that one gets mixed up with friendly sometimes.  It's not regularly flown, so it usual ly needs a double take
