Birdman Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 Hey guys, given the graphic imprvement coming in for IL2, I'm considering upgrading my 770 to a 2nd hand 970 (for under 200€). Do you think it's worth it? the extra 2Gb of Vram are a must these days? My processor is a i5 4670k OC'd @ 4GHz a quick research on the interwebz tells me the 2 pair well. Any input will be much appreciated, thanks!
DD_Arthur Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 You are looking to do exactly what I'm going to do next week. I'm hoping the upgrade will allow me to fly in Ultra mode all the time. ebay here we come!
BeastyBaiter Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 The GTX 770 2GB is an abysmal GPU for BoS. I know, I had one (technically still do, sitting in closet). The GTX 970 is vastly superior and it has little to do with the extra VRAM, though that helps too. $200 seems a bit high for a 970 though, I'd expect around $125 for such a card. If it really is $200, it would be more cost effective to go an extra $50 and get a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB (in a couple weeks when prices settle down).

BeastyBaiter Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 New GPU prices are heavily inflated due to bitcoin and the alt coins going sky high in price last month. The prices crashed over the past week though, so once new GPU's are in stock, no one will buy at the current absurd prices. Hence why I think they will drop to reasonable levels in a couple weeks. I'm betting you can get a GTX 1060 6GB for under 250 by the end of the month. 150 isn't too horrible for a GTX 970 I suppose, I just have a hard time recommending it at that price. That's doubly true since its predecessor, the GTX 770 2GB is worth less than the cost of ebay/paypal fees + shipping it to a buyer (in the USA).
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 770 to 970 will be a huge improvement. Borderline unplayable to nearly perfect at 1080p in my opinion.

Sorry but your statement sounds little bit crazy to me,like from alternative universe...I live in Europe and right now GPU prices and availability are catastrophic to say at least...there is only one mainstream GPU in stock(at least last week was) and that is GTX 1060 3gb and those cards are sell for almost 400$ here...and even at this price they sell them like hot cakes,so 200$ for GTX970 is really good price right now...other than that there is no GTX1060 6gb,GTX1070,GTX1080,RX570 ,RX580 in stock ,and they will not be in stock for at least another month or two, miners just buy everything,no matter the price. Matt Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 The GTX 970 works really well for 1080p in IL2. If you want to use higher resolutions, you might have to lower some graphic settings. But i think the upgrade will be worth it anyway.

I'm hoping it will be a huge improvement Borderline unplayable? This is what I get now with a 770; online offline I think the devs have done a hellavu job on making this game run well and look good on what is relatively old hardware. Extended landscape, clouds and raindrops? Bring it on! Edited January 19, 2018 by DD_Arthur
PatrickAWlson Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 My 970 works very well for Il2 and everything else... until VR. But without VR I am quite happy with it.

NN_Razor Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 I still have a 770 with a 2500k and a Benq 34 screen. It's enought for me, for the moment. Just wait for next VR generation to upgrad, even if my config' don' t crash before....
Feldarzt Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 (edited) i5 4690 (non OC) + GTX 970 @ 2560x1440 on ultra with only shadows set to high. -> 60 - 100 FPS on my G-Sync singlescreen. When using the Rift, everything set to low or off, I just get 90 FPS without AI Planes. As soon as another Plane is around, it drops to 45 and motion sickness kicks in. So the 970 is doing it's job well on one screen - I was surprised about the performance in IL2 - but it's not suited for anything else than that. Edited January 20, 2018 by Feldarzt

I don't plan on going VR or multi screen in the foreseeable future. The card is ordered, it will arrive next week hopefully.
DD_Arthur Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Very interested in how you get on with it Bidartarra.

WWGriphos Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I had a 770 with a BenQ 32 at 1440. It was okay. I upgraded to a 970. It did make a significant difference. I’m happy with it. Don’t get a 1060. Don’t get any 60 series. A 970 outperforms it. The 60 series isn’t a good value for the price.
Giglio Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Hi, my PC with more than 2 years: gtx970 pny reference + fx6300 4.4 oc + 8gb ram 1920. Bos: vsinc and ultra. After updating il2 to dx11 it keep 60fps in almost all conditions and maps, both in SP and MP. No updates to my PC for now
Birdman Posted January 23, 2018 Author Posted January 23, 2018 So I recieved the 970 today, installed it and run a few tests: I'm at 60 fps on ultra and 1080p (tried only MP). So far so good I'd say. It's my first time buying a 2nd hand GPU, so we'll see how that plays out as time goes by.
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted January 23, 2018 Posted January 23, 2018 I think you will be fine. Static PC components rarely fail during normal operation. Therefore, used components are usually safe as long as you know that you are buying a part that is not already broken.

I think it will be a good compromise to "refresh" my PC for a bit. 150€ sounds good, got mine a few months ago for 125€ (but with non working fan regulation, modded to manual fan). With a slight tune the gtx970 are almost on par with gtx1060, which go for well over 300€ thanks to f****g miners. i5 4690 (non OC) + GTX 970 @ 2560x1440 on ultra with only shadows set to high. -> 60 - 100 FPS on my G-Sync singlescreen. Even when i had an i3 4150 i could play on the smallest map, 1 vs 1 dogfights, low settings, 90fps 95% of the time. Only dipping when physics has been rendered (planes desintegrating, stalling, crashing) Edited February 11, 2018 by ironk79

I speculate that the extra 200 MHz (3.9 GHz max turbo to to 4.1 GHz OC) might make a difference. Perhaps also settings and memory speed.
