BFsSmurfy Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Got me a Rift a while back but due to decorating only just got round to setting up the PC again. It came with 2 of the sensor posts and 2 touch controllers. Sod`s law states I have only 2 available usb ports, do I need both the sensors just to sit in a chair and fly IL2 BoX, or can I just connect one. Any placement tips or links to getting it set up to suit me? Cheers. Ps I`ve ordered a 4 port usb 3.0 to pci-e card.
dburne Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 (edited) Ideally you want your Oculus Headset USB and Sensors plugged into USB 3.0 ports. Good move on getting the PCIe card. Sensors can work in USB 2.0, but may experience some lagging/stuttering. Headset definitely needs USB 3. If only playing a seated game, you can get by with one sensor. I did it for about a month when I first got my Rift a year ago, then added the Touch controllers and set them up along with the included second sensor. If you set up your Touch controllers, it will want that second sensor hooked up. But even if just seated, I would encourage you especially when you have that PCIe card in to go ahead and set up the controllers with both sensors for an overall better tracking experience. You also may eventually get a kick out of some of the free Touch games that come with the Rift. I have my two sensors on my desk facing me, angle in and up slightly. When you go through the Rift setup it will also guide you for your optimum sensor placement. You may want to wait till you have the PCIe USB 3 card in to have the best experience to get going with. BFsSmurfy Posted January 16, 2018 Author Posted January 16, 2018 Thanks for the help much appreciated.
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 (edited) What dburne said. Try both sensors, that's best for when you turn around. They don't have to be +1m apart, just press "skip" and continue with the setup. But make sure that you find static places for the sensors. Best is to bolt them into a wall, or into the desk, and then redo the sensor setup. The reason is, that if you move the sensors by accident, wind, dog- or cat-energy, more often than not some stutters will appear, for example with grey-outs within your headset. Then you want to redo the sensor setup and make sure the sensors stay fixed. Also, get the Oculus Tray Tool (google it), it easily allows you to put your Computer's energy options to "max performance" and disable ASW and any USB-autosleep activity (terrible if that happens to a sensor while playing). Best of luck and fun, and welcome to the club! Edited January 16, 2018 by 4./JG52_Fenris_Wolf
SCG_Neun Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 I just got OR myself and appreciate the suggestions.....I'm going to velcro the sensors, and then bolt my arse into the chair....
dburne Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 Thanks for the help much appreciated. You are most welcome! Have fun and enjoy. Be sure and post back your impressions when you get it going.
BFsSmurfy Posted January 18, 2018 Author Posted January 18, 2018 First impression just using Oculus free apps is it`s pretty good, need to sharpen up the image a touch because I found wearing the glasses (I need them for computer work) and getting the headset on without yanking them off my face virtually impossible. I`ve got tray tools running and Steam VR running so let`s go from there. No motion sickness, but I didn`t get any when I tried DK1 in 2013 so I didn`t think I would. Someone on Oculus forum has posted that 390.65 Nvidia drivers can cause issues??. After doing the set up my PC refused to co-operate, was still running but screen went black and nada, had to reboot to get it all back running. Using a 4 port powered Inateck USB3.0 to PC!e card in the second PCIe 16x slot, seems to be happy so far. 1 sensor is in that card and a sensor and the headset are in the 2 ports on the mobo.Onwards and upwards!!!
BFsSmurfy Posted January 18, 2018 Author Posted January 18, 2018 Ok just played BoX for the first time with Rift, couple of things to iron out. 1) got to sort some glasses out to sharpen the image, my usual work glasses are of no use. 2) There`s some some of blue circle displayed roughly centred on the seat, that`s an annoyance how do I get rid of that? I`m running Steam VR, Tray Tools and the Rift Software 3) Head position needs to go up and slightly backwards, reticle in 109 is barely visible and my head appears to be quite close to the windscreen. Got to learn to play again!!!!, yesterday I flew mission for first time in about 6 months I got 2 Migs and 2 Il2, same mission with Rift blown out of the sky within 30 secs of getting into the fight!!! Overall this puts you in the cockpit, not sure if I`m going to experience the true sensation of diving, climbing and rolling etc, that is yet to be seen given my abysmal performance in my first mission with Rift.
BFsSmurfy Posted January 18, 2018 Author Posted January 18, 2018 Turning into pita.Il2 locks up something about memory at line xxxx and when the hangar scene loads the image is not centred. Rift software told me that the driver for the USB card needed updating so I did, since then I`ve set up sensor position again and set up Steam VR again, still skews off to the right...grrrrr!!!!

I tried both my normal (far distance) glasses and my work/computer (mid/close distance) glasses when I demoed the Rift, and it confirmed what I'd read - you need to use your long distance prescription for the Rift. While it's possible to get the headset over your glasses, it's a pain. I spent about $25 (USD, including shipping) to get a 3D-printed frame insert and a pair of glasses from Zenni Optical that the frame insert was designed to work with - fits right into the Rift headset and works great, and was about $50-75 cheaper than some of the alternatives I'd seen. Highly recommend that you get yourself a set (you can check out the solution I used here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1602460 ). 2. That blue circle is easy to get rid of - IIRC, the answer to this is found in the following thread: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/28589-getting-rid-blue-ring-chaperone/?hl=%2Bchaperone&do=findComment&comment=555952. 3. Head position is easy to adjust (though, for some unfortunate reason, not while you're in VR mode) - easiest solution appears to be to simply start BoX in non-VR mode, use the Ins/Home/PgUp set of keys to position your virtual head where you want it per usual, then hit F10 to save that position and quit BoX. Your head position should then be just fine when you restart BoX in VR. It may seem like it's a PITA now, but stick with it - the VR experience is BoX is amazing when you get it working right.
