hames123 Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 (edited) I was just replaying a very old 1C game, Theatre of War 2 Kursk. Despite being sadly wasted by the lack of content(a massive pity given the amount of units modeled and the physics engine and everything, if any game needs a blitz edition it is this one), the content there is remains excellent, especially the Kursk campaigns. I was wondering if the tank sims missions will resemble the ones in that game, which mostly have Germans attacking line after line of dug in Soviet troops and AT guns, with dug in tanks. Or will it mostly be tank combat in the open, with both sides moving to get each other? Edited January 12, 2018 by hames123
Feathered_IV Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 I suspect most of the missions will be online; Spawn and travel a collision course to the enemy spawn point. Shoot and advance until the tank is immobilized and sit there until choosing to respwan. Or shoot and advance until destroyed then respawn. There might be some static missions for offline play like you described in ToW though.
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 Of course, the mission editor will allow players to design scenarios. Therefore, I think there will be many different types of missions. I expect to see everything ranging from long single-player campaigns to "tank-quake" multiplayer servers.
ShamrockOneFive Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 It's still early. We can guess at what it can do but we don't have a solid idea of what the gameplay options will be beyond tanks, multicrew, and fully integrated with the rest of the IL-2 series.
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 If you want a taste of tank combat, check the missions already available in Il-2 or download some from this forum. Although tanks are in a very early stage of development, they can be quite fun. Perhaps you have already done this.
hames123 Posted January 12, 2018 Author Posted January 12, 2018 Actually the more I play TOW 2 Kursk the more I think that 1C should try and revive it somewhat, ideally with a set of campaigns for Operation Bagration, since they already have all the units needed. 1C publishes Il-2 right? The devs should pass this info up their chain of command.
=IL2AU=chappyj Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 How vr is implemented in tanks il2 will be the most interesting thing about it. Will you be sitting in a fully rendered turret Will the vr user be able to physically move around the turret and change positions in this way ? How will tank optics be accessed ? By hotkey zoom to view or by physically leaning in and looking down the tube ?
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 (edited) That is exactly what I've been wondering about. Of course, it would be very nice to look through optics just by leaning towards them. However, I'm not sure that the game engine can handle it properly. I imagine that every optic will require its own picture-in-picture rendering instance. Much like the mirrors available on aircraft, this comes at a considerable performance cost. A single optic is easy enough to handle, but many tanks had far more than that (a turret might have the gunner's sight plus five or more vision blocks). It's possible that some sort of compromise between accuracy and performance will be necessary. For example, optics might only be rendered when the player's head is near them. Alternatively, some periscopes might only be 'holes' in the tank. Edited January 12, 2018 by Mitthrawnuruodo
