1CGS LukeFF Posted January 12, 2018 1CGS Posted January 12, 2018 Two questions: first, were Bf 109 G-14s still being fitted with an MG 151/20 cannon by late 1944, or had they transitioned fully to the MK 108? Secondly, I have read here and there that some K-4s were fitted with an MG 151/20 nose cannon. Is that true and if so, where does that evidence come from? Thanks!
LLv34_Wmaker Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 Prien & Rodeike in their Messerschmitt Bf 109 F, G, & K Series: An Illustrated Study, mention that many of the WNF built G-14s had the MK108 (Bf 109G-14/U4). Hannu Valtonen lists in his book Messerschmitt BF 109 Ja Saksan Sotatalous two separate WNr.blocks of G-14/U4s with 600 aircraft in total produced between August '44 and December '44. At the same time there were also 20mm armed G-14s produced by both Mtt and Erla. Valtonen mentions that 2341 G-14s were delivered during 1944. So examples with either cannon were around in numbers in the end of 1944. Both Hannu Valtonen and Prien & Rodeike mention that there were K-4s which were delivered with MG151/20 instead of the Mk108. Janda's & Poruba's Messerschmitt Bf 109K by JaPo mentions that wiring for the MG151/20 was prepared by Messerschmitt for the Bf109K in case Rheinmetall-Borsig couldn't deliver enough MK108s on time. That way Bf109K-4 production wouldn't get halted due to lack of cannons and MG151/20s could be installed instead.
