wtornado Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 I will be changing computers when the New HTC Vive Pro comes out instead of buying a new monitor etc. Quote:The Vive Pro has a 2880 x 1600 dual OLED display, falling short of the rumoured 4K resolution but still 78% greater than the 2160 x 1200 original. The wireless adapter is interesting too. Computer requirements have not been released yet so I am definitely waiting to see what is the best Alien-ware rig to get for it price/value wise. How well will it work with IL-2 BOX and Cliffs of Dover Blitz and the New tank game? Some seem to complain about pixels with the old Vive. Any comments or suggestions for the computer savvy?
Urra Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 (edited) I would say get a pc with single 1080ti card.(based on my experience with 980 card and trying to push it to the limit only allows me to run minimum quality settings with the rift.) The processor generation marker is less important. I will most likely get this headset as well. Looking forward to it. Edited January 10, 2018 by TunaEatsLion
BeastyBaiter Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 I'm using a Rift with a GTX 1080 TI and i7-8700k overclocked to 5.0 GHz with super sampling set so high the game runs significantly higher resolution than the Vive Pro (though you could certainly super sample with that too). The game is mostly CPU limited with my setup. As for Cliffs of Dover, it won't work as Cliffs of Dover does not support VR at all. Allegedly that will change but we'll have to wait and see when/if that happens. For BoX and the tank game based off it, I suspect the Vive Pro will work well. Both the Rift and Vive already work great and the added resolution should make things a lot nicer. I plan to pass on it though, they haven't released pricing info but given the silly pricing of the current Vive, I expect it to be massively over priced compared to the roughly equal Samsung Odyssey (allegedly they use the same displays even).
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 (edited) Isn't there an Oculus mess hall on May 1st or March 1st? While I don't remember from the top of my head, I will afterwards decide on which HMD I will upgrade to in 2018. Oculus current 1st gen tech was better than Vive's (picture quality, sde, comfort, controllers, home software package) while equal in tracking with 3 sensors, and far superior in affordability. I want to know who will win the next race, and go based on that. There's no use in a vive pro if Oculus releases Rift pro /2 in autumn 2018 for a competitive price. It is a Facebook event, May 1st IIRC. Speculation is the announcement of the Vive Pro may push Oculus to share some info on next gen of Rift at that event.
kestrel79 Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 (edited) Think I will upgrade to VR once the next round of video cards come out and they release the next gen VR headsets. I'm due for a new PC This is a start looks great, hopefully we hear a counter from Oculus soon too. Edited January 12, 2018 by kestrel79

Yeah I am due and getting the itch for a new PC build as well, trying to hold off till later in the year. It will be a sizeable expense, another reason I feel my Rift will be just fine for me this year. ( unless of course something happens to it then all bets are off).
1./KG4_EKat Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 I was a little disappointed that the Vive Pro didn't include eye tracking to help alleviate the graphics card and motherboard upgrade problem. However, this Tobii product, apparently demoed at CES 2018, looks promising as a possible headset add-on: https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/13/tobii-vr-eye-tracking/#/

However, this Tobii product, apparently demoed at CES 2018, looks promising as a possible headset add-on: https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/13/tobii-vr-eye-tracking/#/ Many years ago when i first saw a similar feature in DSLR camera with autofocus based on eye tracking I thought this was an Eureka moment looking at things without having to move your whole head in a flight sim be it VR or not, I always thought was a huge game changer and one of the big differences/disconnect between R/L and sim Watching Tobii development (slowly) over years has always made me want to try their product , but as of yet it has not seen enough mainstream adoption/compatibility/functionality vs investment to consider (personally) for normal monitor (although very close) It's inclusion with VR and the advantages of foveated res (with decent performance from real world PC's) may be the game changer I have been looking forward to, full accurate head and combined eye tracking are very exciting Cheers, Dakpilot
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 If I see the Vive Pro with eye-tracking expansion, and Oculus doesn't kick a bunny in their May 1st presentation, I see myself going HTC this time, without hesitation. I'm quite unfaithful when it comes to brands.
