SCG_motoadve Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Last night flying an LA 5 in V Luki map . oil will overheat all the time, I had to fly 50% power to avoid reaching 100c. Lost an engine twice, just cruising to the combat area. Mixture was 100% rich Oil Rad 100% open Rpms 2000 Cowl open Throttle 75% I fly with no engine aids offline and that has never happened.
curiousGamblerr Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) La 5 has three temp controls: oil rads, inlet cowls and outlet cowls. You use the word "cowl" singular, so perhaps you didn't know there were two? Generally you want oil and inlet 100% open, and outlet <20% (I usually do 20% summer or 10% in winter and close it when engaged). If you did know about the second cowl, idk what the problem could be. SCG_motoadve Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 So the big cowl you can see on the nose that you can open and close, are they the outlet cowls? I was just managing those and the oil radiator. Which one is the inlet cowl?
curiousGamblerr Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 Yup that's the outlet. I'm not sure where on the aircraft the inlet cowl is, I don't think you can see it from the cockpit. The control is the same as the inlet cowl for the I-16, it's a separate keybinding you can find in the settings. AFAIK no aircraft has inlets and water, so I have my inlets mapped to the same rotary other aircraft use for water rads.
unreasonable Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 So the big cowl you can see on the nose that you can open and close, are they the outlet cowls? I was just managing those and the oil radiator. Which one is the inlet cowl? The inlet cowl is the shutters directly behind the propeller and in front of the engine cylinders. LCtrl +/- The outlet cowls are the two bare metal panels at the side of the engine. LAlt +/- If you QM and sit on the runway with engine running and check the keys (default above IIRC) you can see them move.
SCG_motoadve Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 Got it , thanks, I was missing the inlet cowl control.
unreasonable Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 And in case you missed it, the cockpit controls are the two wheels on the right of your seat - hard to see and judge where they are if you do not have HUD/tech tips enabled, but I suppose a RL pilot would just feel them.
216th_Jordan Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Without the inlet cowls I believe you get no air cooling for oil as well as cylinder cooling, so for oil rad and outlew shutters to work you have to have this opened (normally 100%). Its only to be closed when engine is in danger of overcooling (gliding in winter for example). The Inlet cow shutters sit in front of the engine around the spinner., the I-16 has them too, there you can see them in full glory Keep oil rads ~60% and outlet cowl ~15-20% Edited January 4, 2018 by 216th_Jordan
GridiroN Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 La5 can fly with its outlet cowl @ 0% pretty much all the time until you get into a fight and stop going fast in a straight line. That's when it begins overheating. Or you can open the outlet when not engaged so you have a bit more time with the cowl totally closed when engaged.
SCG_motoadve Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 What I find odd is that it never overheated when playing offline, and I play with full real settings except icons (VR) Why is different online?
curiousGamblerr Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 What I find odd is that it never overheated when playing offline, and I play with full real settings except icons (VR) Why is different online? It shouldn't be different. If anything, multiplayer maps tend to set the temp lower so it should overheat more in single player. Since you're using custom settings, maybe you just missed the relevant checkbox?

Maybe in offline it comes open by default while online it comes closed by default..... Maybe its not an offline/online thing but a mission thingy ? Edited January 5, 2018 by 3./JG15_Staiger
Nightrise Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 Maybe in offline it comes open by default while online it comes closed by default..... Maybe its not an offline/online thing but a mission thingy ? If you do qm and start in the air its already full open.
