In RoF we have a tradition of saluting shot down opponents. After you shot down somebody you pay him tribute. !S!. And a gentleman responds !S!. Almost all players do so.

I dont see this in BoX. It would be nice.

Posted

I don't see it quite as much as I used to, but you often see "gf" for "good fight".

In BoX, we use "you noob, you rammed me!" for "!S!" :)

Sure let me take my hands off stick and throttle to try and type that while in vr... while the gesture is noble the practicality is lacking. Sometimes I'll make the effort but more often than not I'd prefer to spend my time six checking and making sure I don't let my victory become short lived. Noble just not practical.

The "S" pre-dates ROF by some margin.   I guess like most people I've used it at times but unfortunately these days it seems to be used increasingly in circumstances where it isn't really justified (after a bounce or where an enemy is otherwise engaged) and often as a mechanism for virtue signalling ones own prowess to the wider group.

I saw it more a couple of years ago. I haven't seen it in a long time.

One of the best things about BoX is that hardly anyone salutes. The saluting in RoF was toxic as hell. People complained if they weren’t saluted or weren’t saluted properly (lower case s was a problem for some people). Others would steal a kill and then somehow salute before the wreckage even hit the ground, even though they had virtually nothing to do with the kill except getting the last bullet in. Seriously. Toxic as hell. Very glad hardly anyone does it in here.

When noobs in RoF asked what the “s” means, I always told them it means “suck it”. 9 times out of 10 that exactly what it meant.

Oh, I ususally Salute, but then, I do fly Ground Attack mostly, so I don't get to do it a lot.

I’m pretty sure the tradition started when someone tried to respond with an F! after being vulched taking off, but accidentally hit the s key. The idiot who vulched him thought he was being saluted for his great skill.

I saw S!, o7, and GF a fair amount while flying the TAW campaign, I also do it in the rare case that i get a kill. It happens, might depend on the server and players tho.

This is indeed a problem and good luck even finding the S key while you're at it! You'll probably end up typing "ED==A" before giving up, and that's assuming you haven't just accidentally bailed out or turned your engine off in the process!!! Otherwise I would love to type more, with the best intentions of course

I do find "o7" a more logical salute than just "S" though...

I often use it, when I finish a good fight, even if I’m the loser. I reserve it for the good, intense fight or when someone pulls off an impressive shot.

That's from the time of the old IL-2, now the novices type LOL   :(

Not a lot of gentlemanly conduct was shown on the Russian front by either side

Victor or vanquished,in the Red Baron 3D days saluting was de rigueur.  It was a more gentlemanly time among the pilots there.  This pretty much continued thru the IL2 1946 period too.

Now, with a less friendly texting procedure the practice has fallen off.  Used to be that three quick keystrokes was all you needed.

Salute !!

WWI was much more chivalrous. S!

I always thought ‘S!’ was a nice gesture. I used the virtual salute to recognize a good fight or to say hello or goodbye.

By the way, please don’t think me rude. If ever I don’t respond, it’s likely because I didn’t see you type. Most of the time my chat is turned off when flying in VR.

Seconded exactly.

It's a nice gesture as it reminds oneself  there's another nerd on the other side sweating and having fun, rather than a faceless enemy from that other faction that deserves to die. Makes it a friendlier online environment.

That irl there was little chivalry on the eastern front is hardly an argument against it. They killed each other back then, this is at best a hobby.

I would salute my enemies if they werent all just lucky when shooting me down or hacking, or both.

I reserve using S! when acknowledging a great fight typically when I have lost the fight or in reply to someone who has saluted me.

I see it used as almost an insult occasionally online which is a shame.

True. People writing S! when they just ambushed someone and gave them no chance (which by itself is of course completely legitimate) can come off as a bit insulting.

Dumb question what does o7 mean?

I used to S! plenty of ppl in ROF, and I did appreciate it in return. But I never felt like i deserved it when I got shot down. Also loads of times I had my hands full and couldn't type anything in chat if I wanted to.

It's the same as S!

Smiley style. It's a head with arm saluting.

It has been known that some people show their respect to the recently downed pilot by shooting his parachute ;) those tales of noble "knights of the sky" were much less common in WW2. they did happen though.

This reminds me of my StarCraft days. The winner saying "good game" was considered bad manners.

I wonder if I ever unintentionally offended someone. I often compliment a pilot I shot down after a challenging combat by saying “good fight”.

I still use it and never in anything resembling a derogatory manner. I also use GF fairly often. Wondered what the o7 was.

Posted

I usually just say, "ELEVATOR!"

That stands for, "Eat Lead, Enemy Vermin, And Taste Of Ruin!"

:biggrin::P:lol:

I doubt it. After a challenging fight it's not a problem.

I use "S!~" As my salute, most of the time it's returned. But now I think most people have their hud turned off (me) for better performance, I also turned off the chat 'beep' but make habbit to periodically turn it back on to check messages and updates

=EXPEND=Tripwire

Yep, I rarely have my HUD on. Guys on Teamspeak tell me if someone is trying to send messages to me in game otherwise I'd miss 90% of messages.

You're definitely not missing much. But I will say we've linked up with random people through chat which can be pretty refreshing compared to the amount of toxicity in chat.

Usually my hands are too busy for it, or my brain is focused on blabbering on comms. I reply to it though.

However I'm not a fan of cookie-cutter complements like that, personally. At the end of a fight which stands out I believe the other person would appreciate a more elaborate comment, even something like "good fight, that was a great shot".
