Stalingrad in ruins

Haven't found a map, scenario, ect... were Stalingrad is not already destroyed... would like to see it intact. Is there a scenario, mission, map, campaign before Stalingrads destruction? Just thought I would get to participate in this epic bombing campaign.

Time constraints during the making of the original BoS are to blame. Originally the Stalingrad map was only a Winter map and the campaign started with the launch of op. Uranus at a point in time where Stalingrad was long since reduced to rubble.

Making a destroyed city look convincing is a lot cheaper than making a pristine one.

Got pulled in by epic trailers and screenshots loaded with intense action, struggle, human conflict. IL2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad gameplay seems like I missed something. I'll give it chance I always do... :)

That would be a good argument in 2005.

I guess adding an undestructed version of Stalingrad would be like making another "module".

Though with the mission builder it should be possible to do Yourself, or maybe only rebuild some parts of the city.

Funny this discussion :)

As we play sometimes IL-2 1946 with VP modification for custom (training & stuff) scenarios, we played also a few times over Stalingrad.

And, sad enough, but the detail level on this old game for the city of Stalingrad is just amaaaaazing.

Unfortunally I cant say that for general graphics, but I really would prefer the IL-2 1946 VP Stalingrad city over our one we fly over in BoS.

I agree completely KG_S_Kalle_Kalutz82.

But the the map in the VP Modpack was created by Cyberolas, not VP. (Just to give credit where credit is due.)

P.S. Even though I am a supporter of the game and own ALL of the content, I was, and continue to be, very disappointed by the mediocre representation of Stalingrad. Yes, blah, blah, blah, I get it, resources, performance, etc.

There was the massive Luftwaffe air raid on the city itself on August 23rd that ignited a firestorm and destroyed most of the structures in Stalingrad. That was more or less still the prelude to the actual main part of the battle so its August 24 and on that the sim features.

Doing the pre destruction city and the post destruction city was obviously a whole lot of work and they decided to focus on that late August 1942 through to the end of the battle in early 1943 time period.

The textures in that '46 video look lovely from a high altitude - really great! Obviously less so lower down.

But I want to say how impressed I was with our own BoS ruined Stalingrad when the game came out, and even now. With our map, for the first time, I understood - I could visualize - the basic topography of the city. The shape of things, the escarpment along the river, the gullies, where Pavlov's house was, why Mamlev Kurgan was so important, etc. I know the ruined walls are basically 2-D sprite things, but I think they do the job really well, and I think the city looks like a, well, "real" ruined city.

Of course, I'd like a pre-bombing Stalingrad, but then I also want a summer Velikie Luki map too! And a Ferrarri. And, for the love of all things holy, an Oculus Rift. My kingdom for a VR headset!...  :P

Not to belabor the point, Swallow, but if you're going to do the "2D sprite" thing, at least one could have some rubble on the ground instead of the boring, sanitized environment. Since I'm a SP guy, the first thing I did was fly in and around Stalingrad. I wasn't impressed.

The fact that the city is pretty much perfectly re created with everything in it's rightful location is impressive.  If you know where things were and should be, it's pretty incredible.

I think the complaints about spending valuable resources on something that doesn't improve gameplay that much.....(if they were to make a pristine Stalingrad).....would be deafening.

"Why be glorifying 1930s Soviet architecture and urban design so much ?" people might scream. ;)

1946 with B.A.T. has 8 Stalingrad maps available in the quick mission editor. City was destroyed in 2 days, August 3rd and 4th. Before and after maps look great. All have active conflicts. The original un-modded map looked great too. It was a before map. Come on now, I think we all expected Stalingrad to look better than it does. I know its meant to work with a wide range of PC specs but I think the original Playstation 1 could handle a flyover of BoS Stalingrad. I'm happy with the game just venting.

It has little to do with performance and more to do with the man-hours needed to create the city in its undamaged form.

I do agree, that it could look better though.

It seems building non-ruined cities takes much more man hours and research. Take our Moscow map for example, they blocked off the heart of the city and made it look good from a distance. There is no way we would get a pristine town of such scale and detail in this sim.

I wouldn’t say there is “no way”, it’s just a tremendous amount of work and with such a small team onsuch a tight schedule, it is no wonder they don’t allocate hundreds and hundreds of man-hours to build a city thst makes up a tiny fraction of one map.

Building a pristine city doesn't seem like a worthwhile way to spend resources, but I'd be keen to see a better wrecked version of Stalingrad.

More rubble, maybe barricades and trenches and tank traps, much more smoke and maybe the odd explosion or burst of tracer so it looks like there's a war on.

One of the most vicious urban campaigns of the whole war and it looks a bit too serene from the air.

I know there could be performance issues with this though but it would add a lot of depth.

I also have no idea whether that's something the devs could do or whether it's an addition for mission designers and people running servers to add.

Either way, it would be good to see more.

Since the first shown screenshots of Stalingrad I've seen the discussion popping up once in a while.

Hopefully with a Mods On option some talented people can make it look more convincing without sacrifing too much performance.

Original post was a question in which the answer was "No" there is no undestroyed version of the Stalingrad map in IL2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad. Topic wandered into the realm of criticism of the quality of the existing map. Which we all remained cordial in discussion. Thank you all for your input.

Can't really agree unfortunately. I thought the CLOD map was horrible - especially London.

Well, still better than BoS Stalingrad and to be honest: even more preferable than in BoS the city
