Well worth a looksee and a big eye opener about this unusual part of the war that many will not be aware of... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCcFw_VtboI ================================= BBC Docu-Drama (in 2 parts of 90 minutes each) about the sinking and subsequent rescue of the passangers aboard the R.M.S Laconia Sorry, I could only find a trailer of this film. The crew aboard the U-156 who initially sunk the ship (12 September 1942) and on realising that the ship was full of Italian POWs and civilians commenced a rescue operation and were also joined by other U-Boats in the area. All the U-Boats that were involved remained above the water line and tied lifeboats to themselves under red cross flags and banners on their decks. The U-156 radioed for help in english and was eventually spotted by a B24 of the U.S Army which fired on them after instructions forcing the U-Boats to submerge. Over half the survivors died. A fascinating story of compassion and military blunders. Edited December 27, 2012 by Lewis 1
Freycinet Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Thanks for those links! I still think the 1970s "World at War" tv series is the best on WWII. It has interviews with many of the main actors in the war and therefore can hardly be beaten. And the narrator is Laurence Olivier...
Freycinet Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 By the way, for Soviet aviation I suggest you look at the 18-episode Wings of Russia documentary series. It is on youtube in full-length. Great footage.

Good atmospheric music too.I enjoy watching episodes on the Discovery Military Channel here in the USA. I also have been enjoying watching episodes of the Canadian-produced "World's Greatest Tank Battles" series. The computer-generated simulation of tanks and tank battles is fantastic. There's also good commentary by veterans of the fighting.
VaeTibi Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Well as I am interested in what caused the out break of WWII I find this documentary very good: Norman Alley's Bombing of USS Panay Special Issue 1937 Newsreel

Both were very well done I thought and really gave a good look into life in pre Nazi Germany.

NZTyphoon Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Just bought the entire series of "Blood in the Snow: Russia's War." This series from the mid-1990s deals with Stalin's reign, but concentrates on the Great Patriotic War Here's a doco on US Guns of WW2 (Tales of the Gun series The series is a little "once over lightly" - there are some erroneous "facts" pushed but some interesting footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayK0oVJWD9s And from the same series Guns of the Sky all from the American perspective (Chuck Yeager is one of the experts) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfxdbs2n5F4 Battle of the Bulge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vml-JaMPuD8 More esoteric The Colditz Glider - Fantastic tribute to the POWs of Colditz:

JG13_opcode Posted March 30, 2013 Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) There was a great series that came out in 1994 called Battlefield. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_(TV_series) It was aired in Canada and the US on PBS, and in the UK on who knows which channel. It doesn't get quite as deep as the excellent Russia's War series which gives a very up-close and personal with Stalin, but it does cover a much broader scope, and gives an interesting overview of most major events of the war, with a nice mix of personal and tactical/strategic views. Overall I really enjoyed it. Edit: grrrrrrrr I hate this forum software: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZlRXXmbC4Phk8x4G7tm26A/videos?view=0 Edited March 30, 2013 by JG13Doggles
