I'm hoping one of the old hands can help out a noob with a problem. Hopefully it's just something minor I've overlooked, and I can say “d'oh” and “thanks” and get on with it.

BoS seems to have installed properly, but when I attempt to fly, things go off the rails. In Quick Mission for example, the selected mission loads and all's well until I get to the Briefing Page and press start. What comes up at that point is a dark screen with a thumbnail map in the bottom right corner and a “Game is paused, Press P” message. Pressing P, the screen remains dark but various overlays appear – flight parameters in the bottom left, a stack of icons on the upper right, nav info bottom right, comms printouts on the left and target icon/info. The sim is running - target location, flight parameters and my position on the map all can be seen to be changing – but I have no 3D visuals, just that dark screen. There are no error messages.

I've tried re-installation twice, but have run up against the same issue each time. My PC is a few years old, but runs FSX, RoF, CloD and DCS with no difficulty at all. W7 64 Home Premium SP 1, Radeon HD 7950 3 GB card, i7-2600 K processor, ASUS P67 MB, TIR5.

Thoughts/suggestions welcome. I'm looking forward to flying BoS, but just can't seem to get there from here.

Thanks Pail, suspect you may be right with the graphics driver suggestion.  I know mine are dated, but have generally taken an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach with drivers.  The one time I did try a graphics driver update, it disabled my TIR 5 and I had to roll back to the previous version anyway.  I suspect there will be others out there flying with a Radeon HD 7950 3 GB card - perhaps one of them can chime in and advise what graphics driver they're using.

During the installation process, the wizard tells me the Net Framework stuff is fine, but does install some DirectX files.

Once the dust settles after New Years, I'll get back to work trying to sort this out.  When a solution is found, I'll post it here.

Good luck! The game is pretty sick once you can, you know, see it  ;)

Good luck blue_six. :salute:    Does sound very much like a graphics driver update is needed.   Also, you might find a TrackIr update will be necessary

All sorted, and many thanks to Pail and DD_Arthur for pointing me in the direction of the AMD graphics card drivers.  They were sadly out-of-date (Catalyst 12.104.0.0 dated 03/28/2013 - my how time flies  ).  I updated to Adrenalin Edition 17.12.2 (12/19/2017) and voila, can now see BoS in all its splendor.  Seems the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach doesn't necessarily apply to video card drivers.  Thanks for your help.

P.S.  The only fly in the ointment from the driver update is that RoF now won't launch.  Appears from recent posts in the RoF forum that AMD is aware and will address the issue.
