signal flares, suggestion

Hello,

BOS & ROF allow the use of signal flares of different colors.

Why not use green signal flares for landing clearance and red for scramble.

Similarly, it would be useful for ground troops to report an attack on IL or JU87 and request air assistance, this would help locate the scene of the action and give life to missions.

Why not also designate by smoke-colored targets.

What do you think??

Nice idea again, Marco, I wouldn't use flair only for scramble, but for permission for takeoff generally, as it was used, at least in the first years, generally, on the german side.

I am not sure, however, for the green flare. I use it the way it is used, when the player is flightleader, for calling for help. I am not really sure, but I have the impression, it works, and I am getting help from my squadmates, when possible.

The next thing, I wanted to try, when I am in the situation, is to shoot a red flare, when I see enemy planes, to their direction. Would be nice, if it works.

But, especially the flares fired by front troops, that one can see in the stock campaign, fired by own artillery batteries, when you cross their position, are really missing, when you fly any kind of ground support mission.

Thanks Yogiflight

The green signal flare is a take-off or landing clearance and the Red signal flare a prohibition or danger.

Nowadays it is so, it must have been similar at the time for these colors.

On the other hand, I think that the Luftwaffe had a coded system for all the colors and the number of signal flares fired.

If anyone had this information ??

For the VVS, I think they also used a signal flare system, especially since their radio system was virtually non-existent during the first two years of war.

MarcoPegase44 - During a 3hr flight to Baltimore and back I re-read my Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Aces of the Russian Front by John Weal. In May of '43 Oberfeldwebel Xaver Muller and his wingman  Fahnrich Norbert Hanning were assigned an escort mission for a Bf 110 that was on an rail gun artillery spotting recon mission. According to Fahnrich Norbert Hanning, An admin NCO fired a "green flare" when the Bf 110 was overhead as a signal for them to takeoff.

Not sure about when a red flare was used - I'll keep searching

"The anxiety, frequently well founded, that the signals became well known to the enemy, who would exploit them for his own attacks, often led to disregard for their use."

The German Air Force versus Russia, 1941 By Generalleutnant Hermann Plocher  https://books.google.com.au/books?id=fg0qDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT146&lpg=PT146&dq=luftwaffe+signal+flare+procedures&source=bl&ots=S4crKQyUrs&sig=_z32-l4NOZWGT2kImUs_ctrkAjU&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjxpeXt-rfYAhUDVLwKHembA6QQ6AEIQTAH#v=onepage&q=luftwaffe%20signal%20flare%20procedures&f=false

It is probably better if you read the bit in this book....but it seems the German flare use procedures changed due to circumstances and lack of air superiority.

...slightly off topic.... One of the things that game Graviteam Tactics does well is the convincing use of flares on the battlefield. Kind of worth checking out...but the way the game is generally stacked against the Russians

(for historical reasons) does annoy me.

I'm sure it is nothing to do with where the game is made.

I think for what we need flares for - it's fine to use "green for scheduled take-offs" on an airfield. I highly doubt a commando unit would set off a flare for a mass aircraft launch - I would think the objective would be to destroy as many aircraft as possible on the ground.
