HDR Video Support

An issue which seems to plague flight sims is the visibility of small and distant targets and aircraft.

The real solution for this issue is right around the corner, the new standards for UHD video.

- Higher resolution displays, 4K or even higher

- Wide Color Gamut

- 10-bit color depth, displaying 1 billion colors instead of the current 16.7 million

- High Dynamic Range (note this is a different HDR than the one in the game’s video settings)

These standards are already in place for current 4K + HDR TVs and disc players, streaming services. Consoles and games for the PS4 and Xbox One X have this. PC gaming seems to be behind the curve here in adopting this new standard, although the 9 and 10 Series Nvidia cards support it. Many PC games do not. Flight sims would particularly benefit from higher quality video output.

This is the best way a flight sim like IL-2 can tackle this issue and it’s the way all future video is headed. Compatability with these standards would be a great feature for the IL-2 series .

It think objects vs ground/sky visibility would be improved significantly with HDR.

I noticed a drastic increase in spotting ability before I bought a 34" Ultrawide. It's not 4K. 2K I think?

The pixles are smaller and I can't stress how much the curve isn't a gimmick. I can spot and identify a target much earlier than I used to in BoX. Cliffs got harder oddly.

When this is finally implemented it will be each individuals eyesight to blame.

I hope for a 4K 42" Ultrawide curved to be affordable as the FINAL stopgap for VR.

I hope for VR 180 degree FOV in ultra high def.

Self bump.

Just got an HDR 4K monitor and it’s pretty incredible. I don’t know how much effort it takes to make a game HDR compatable but the extra color depth in a flight sim would be fantastic.

I guess IL-2: GB cannot produce real HDR info to HDR capable displays.
I'm running my Win 10 with HDR On and HDR videos, X-Plane 11 etc. looks amazing with HDR enabled.
In IL-2 with Win 10 HDR enabled looks very over saturated mess. IL-2 HDR setting doesn't make any difference. Only way to fix this is to run IL-2 HDR Off from Windows 10 settings.

Any chance we could get real HDR support to IL-2 in the future?

Yeah, non HDR content looks terrible with HDR enabled. The only plus is that an HDR capable monitor, that meets the color and contrast specs, will look very good running SDR. IL-2 does look really good on the LG HDR screen I’m running.

The HDR setting in this game isn’t HDR video. Confusing isn’t it?

Bump…

4 years later and every game I own has HDR except IL-2 and one other combat flight sim.
This game would look gorgeous in HDR
