MG151/15 Question

My question is:

Why cant i mount nose MG151/15 on Bf-109 F4.

Im most sure some pilots liked the 15mm cannon more than 20mm.

Maybe some pilots still used it on F4?

I have no proof of it but if the argument is "no because its not historical"

Well MC.202 did not have 20mm cannons only in few test planes.

I personally like 15mm more and its bit sad that i can only use it on model F2 and its Moscow only.

What you guys think?

It is not there because it was not used on the F4. MG 151/15 production was limited and the 20mm version was better in every sense except armor penetration which was slightly better on the 15mm. I very much doubt that an appreciable number of LW pilots prefered the MG 151/15.

More muzzle velocity is what makes the cannon more suitable in dogfights.

Pilots didn't really get much of a choice. After combat evaluations it was determined that the higher explosive power of the MG151/20 was preferred over the MG151/15 and all Bf109F-4 and later types were armed with that cannon. Bf109F-2s were also upgraded and sometimes field modified with the 20mm cannon which tells you what the prevailing winds were for the Luftwaffe fighter corps.

A flatter trajectory certainly makes it easier to get hits, but each one does considerably less damage, on average.  Remember that the most important job of fighters is to intercept bombers: relatively easy to hit but requiring a large amount of destructive power to bring down. Hence every air force moved towards larger cannons over time. MV is not everything.

The 15mm didn't have a useful HE Round, which those who were used to the MG FF/M of the Emil really appreciated. The Pilots were used to this very slow 20mm and the 151/20 would still have been an Upgrade in every Aspect.

And since the Boom and Zoom and Head On were the preferred way the Germans flew in, precise Aim was normally Difficult with the high Passing Speeds and so it was important that even Hits in the Structure would do more than just overpenetrate and leave two small holes.

That's why the remaining 151/15s were relegated to Ground Attack Aircraft like the HS.129, as well as Waffenbehälter.

In the F-4 the 15mm was not mounted, in the F-2 it was normally replaced as soon as possible.

The Game also drastically overmodels the AP Effect, while HE is quite undermodelled and will be changed at some Point, as they are reworking overall Damage Modelling.

Maybe this is why it feels so good.

And thanks for replies i know mutch of this but wanted to talk about it.

Since the game has weird options like Macchi's Cannons was wondering a bit..

Yes, Jason stated in one of the Q&As that they will look into it, but since it's only 1 Man doing all the actual Coding and there is so much else to do, it won't come quickly.

Modelling HE is very difficult. All we can really do is offer continued support and help fund the Project.
