Danziger Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 Your lines, rivets, screws, paint chips, tiny details are on a whole new level! I hope you do some other aircraft to this high standard in the future.
Corto Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 @Tom P40 is not the best plane in game but now it is the best looking plane. Skilfull work!!! Thank you!
Madcop Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 Your lines, rivets, screws, paint chips, tiny details are on a whole new level! I hope you do some other aircraft to this high standard in the future. Maybe but sorry, it looks like this one has flew through a laundry... The colours are off. There are a lot of WWII colour pictures of these aircrafts. Some other skinners got them right, so, it must be possible for Tom also. This is a nice non historical rendering. Sorry for this. By saying "beautiful" I think it is not a great help to a skinner. I prefer the truth , even if it must hurt sometimes. I think that Tom is working hard to get a nice result, he deserves some constructive and friendly criticisms. Madcop
Tom_Weiss Posted January 19, 2018 Author Posted January 19, 2018 (edited) Thank you guys Maybe but sorry, it looks like this one has flew through a laundry... The colours are off. There are a lot of WWII colour pictures of these aircrafts. : D it is a WIP screenshot , it is not color calibrated yet about the colors - they tend to get bleached as I weather it which is what you expect as colors fade as they weather under the sun this one, as it is a Torch P-40 , that was flown early on - is darker I think that Tom is working hard to get a nice result, he deserves some constructive and friendly criticisms. and they are welcome Edited January 19, 2018 by Tom_Weiss 1

Raptorattacker Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Great stuff in progress Tom. Of COURSE you gotta 'tune' it and it's obvious that you are doing just that mate. The progress is there to see. I've been thinking of going down this road for a while as well as I love doing things from 'scratch'. I won't bother with the P-40 now, just wait til you've finished with this!! Keep it up mate!!
Wolfram-Harms Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 Your skinning works are really well done, Tom. The only thing I can't get used to is the overall surface effect, which may be the Alpha Channel; the effect of a semi-gloss laquer over metal or wood surfaces. Your craft all appear to me more like the were covered with cork. Don't take it too hard, it may be a matter of taste, and as I said - I like everything else on your works.
Tom_Weiss Posted March 3, 2018 Author Posted March 3, 2018 to look more like this ? the P-40 still has a lot of way the alpha channel in P3D - I already changed it and I'll update all the P-40 skins this weekend to use the newer alpha .
Field-Ops Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 Thats more like it Tom_Weiss Hopefully this 3.001 update makes it easier on you guys to make bare metal skins. Looks like a lot of work and tweaking is needed in the alpha channel to make it work with no guarantee of success.
Tom_Weiss Posted March 4, 2018 Author Posted March 4, 2018 I was trying to add in the alpha too much stuff - reverted to the more streamlined approach. the reflections have to be added to each model regardless of the game engine, bare metal will then depend on how the developer finds time to do it.
Wolfram-Harms Posted March 4, 2018 Posted March 4, 2018 (edited) Tom, you can always copy the original Alpha layer from the basic template, if you messed too much with yours. You just need to open "Channels" then, activate only the Alpha Channel, delete the old content and insert it there. Bare metal is VERY tricky to get, and a shiny polished P-51 with a mirroring aluminium might be impossible. Here is what I got for CptJackSparrow so far. There always remained a tendency to appear slightly "milky". Edited March 4, 2018 by Wolfram-Harms 1
Tom_Weiss Posted March 4, 2018 Author Posted March 4, 2018 (edited) that skin looks great ! trying to get the metallic effect is difficult, it would be nice if with 3.0 we get it for every model in the sim. the alpha is OK now - took me a while to understand how it works and move on from a P3D/FSX mindset I have. this is how the weathered skin looks now and this is the clean Edited March 4, 2018 by Tom_Weiss 1

That 'milkiness' is a real obstacle because it can look good in some lighting and then shit in another. We can just keep plodding away and eventually it will come. We'll see, we'll see!! ps That 109 looks great, by the way. Edited March 5, 2018 by Raptorattacker

A matter of tastes, surely - I'd take the bottom one! 19 minutes ago, Raptorattacker said: ps That 109 looks great, by the way. Thanks, Tom and Raptor!
