SCG_motoadve Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 First Q of 2018 we will get the next gen video cards. What improvements in VR? I am guessing we will be able to run SS to the max and IL2 BOX on Ultra? At this moment I am running almost at ultra, SS 2.2 smoothly. Dynamic resolution at .8 ASW ON and forced to 45 FPS so no prop artifacts. Quite happy with it, only miss the detailed ebemy planes in my gunsights. Do you guys think new video cards will be much of an improvement? This on an OC GTX 1080
dburne Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 I think next gen video card, tied in with a late gen system like 7700k or 8700k, with DDR4 ram, will get pretty darn close if not completely to being able to run IL-2 at high or ultra detail with a good SS and maintain 90 fps at all times with current generation of VR. Just my opinion, but really an 8700k system today can get pretty darn close to this already.
SCG_motoadve Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 I have an i 7 4770 , will I see a big improvement in VR if I upgrade to a 8700 k? I thought VR was mostly demanding on the GPU.
BOO Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 where did you get the notion of a new generation of video card in Q1 2018?

Certainly a better cpu would help, as it is more than just the cpu but also the faster ram the new board would use. But the Video Card and MB really kind of work in tandem to balance each other. I put a 1080Ti card in my rig a few months ago, replaced a 1080. I saw a nice performance increase, but still while my rig runs at 4.5 GHz I can not come close to maintaining 90 fps at all times. I am at 90 a good bit, but during heavy battle scenarios it can drop down into the 70's and 60's. However I am positive if I replaced my MB and Ram today, with say a 8700k and DDR4 ram, I would be much closer to that 90 fps constant rate. The two can work together to compliment each other nicely ( cpu/mb and GPU).
BeastyBaiter Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 My 1080 TI rarely exceeds 60% usage in BoS while at 90 fps. BoS's limitation is the CPU, not the GPU (when looking at a GTX 1080 TI + i7-8700k at 5.0 GHz). This is with SS at 1.7, I could run it higher but there doesn't seem to be a point in doing so and not all steamVR games can handle that. Also, I haven't heard anything to suggest new GPU's will be offered anytime soon.

BeastyBaiter Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) Yes, though I'm not comfortable with the voltage it requires to run it like that 24/7 (1.36 actual VCore with LLC set for zero v-droop). I mainly leave it at 4.7 GHz unless I'm loading up BoS or DCS and even then I typically leave it at my daily setting. My daily setting is 4.7 GHz, it runs a much more friendly 1.28v actual VCore with LLC allowing it to droop to 1.232v under a full stress test. Thermals aren't an issue in either case and my 8700k is not de-lidded. Should probably throw that info in my signature. Edit: Spelling fail Edited December 27, 2017 by BeastyBaiter
ZachariasX Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Interesting. I can go to 4.7 GHz on 3 core usage on the 7900X and still run Prime95 without thermal runaway or outright BSOD. I can set 3 cores up to 5 GHz and boot Windows and play BoX. But as Prime95 quickly detects errors, I don‘t care for those 7% performance. 4 cores I can run at 4.5 GHz, 10 cores on 4.2 GHz. AVX offset to 0. Going higher... probably I would require a cooling solution from a nuclear powerplant.
Guest deleted@134347 Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) i did the de-lid/re-lid with the liquid metal mod to my 8700k and I can run 5ghz at ~55-59C at 1.28v in prime95 at 100% for about an hour. Before the mod it was running at 80-85C in the similar config at 1.3v. this mod is a must for 8700k in my opinion. ClarkFable Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 I feel like the current gen GPUs are less of an issue for VR than the CPUs, especially in multiplayer.
=IL2AU=chappyj Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 In il2 yea. Next gen gpu will definitely remove any minor bottlenecks and help with higher cloud and grass and terrain detail settings but only really to push to ultra settings (as an aside in my experience higher settings makes you less able to spot imo) Cpu wise... I'm not sure theres all that much difference in 6700k-8700k range if you are already clocking 4.6ghz ? Next gen gpus will however be critical on making the jump to vive pro or pimax 8k(really 4k) headsets probably
