II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 (edited) I'd like to see a bunch of on board camera angles, like so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6McV4L_K7xA It'd be fantastic for movie making in the sim. Virtual GxPrx's in six or eight positions. 1. Gun camera position 2. Wingtip to cockpit 3. Forward on the tail 4. Forward from the underbody 5. Up at a 45 6. Rearward from the underbody 7. Inside the cockpit/just over the pilots head 8. Outside and just behind the cockpit on the fuselage. In a future release of course. I'd love to make these kinds of formation movies and record kills from just barely outside the aircraft. Except for the gun cam position I wouldn't even mind a slight fisheye effect. Freycinet Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 We don't need all of these fixed views, we just need the ability to freely zoom, point, translate and tilt the camera with respect to the airplanes. Then we can chose our own angles precisely as we want them. It is like that in CoD. Apart from that it would be fantastic to be able to rewind the track files and play backwards to get the exact best shots. 2

From what I understand of the recording feature, we can skip back and forth during playback. This will make movie making much easier, as in CoD if you miss the shot you have to start the replay over.
ACG_Kraut Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) I would love to be able to place a camera where ever I want like how you would with a gopro IRL. This would make for some very nice shots and help with getting some odd angles that are sometimes needed. PS Hey N8! Love your stuff, you have a lot of very very good work. Just found your channel recently. Keep it coming! Edited December 25, 2013 by 4./JG26_Kraut
71st_AH_Hooves Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Like Frey said. I would love to have a "go pro" but be able to put it where ever, how ever i want. I mean ANYWHERE in or on the 3d model. That would truely add some epic tools for movie makers.

Freycinet Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 A little-used axis in many flightsim movies is the tilt axis. In RoF you cannot tilt the horizon in any way with outside views. It always remains stubbornly flat. In CoD you can tilt the horizon by using TrackIR onthe outside views. Tilted horizons inject lots of life and tension into shots. A flat horizon makes just about any shot pretty boring. I've used the effect (more or less subtly) in most of my later movies.

I think I have submitted that in both suggestion to developers and question to developers threads.
StG2_Manfred Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 The outside padlock view is also very nice, cos it keeps both planes in view in a very smoothly manner...
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted December 25, 2013 Author Posted December 25, 2013 I still like the GxPrx method. Either multi-point or a variety of fixed points. Good for combat, racing and airshow/formation/aerobatics. Makes for beautiful films IRL. Can't imagine it wouldn't do the same in the sim. 1

Then you have plenty of room to tilt without losing image quality when editing videos to Full HD. I like to have aperture settings in replays, so you can adjust depth of field.
Freycinet Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I'd rather have the tilt possibility native in the camera controls. Should be very simple to implement by just letting trackir control the external camera when desired.
FuriousMeow Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Hmm? You can tilt the camera using shift key in RoF, and BoS, and it allows manipulation of the camera angle.

Apart from that it would be fantastic to be able to rewind the track files and play backwards to get the exact best shots. Yes I agree, the ability to adjust the camera position in the fixed position relative to the aircraft ('F4' view ) would be great. FWIW I've written out a guide to the Track Viewer and External Views here: Battle of Stalingrad (BOS) Hints & Tips While we talking about the track viewer, another couple of functions I would love to see, are the ability to edit track length and add 'trials'. If you wanted to share one of these tracks on the forum, a full 20 minute flight would run to 100mb or so even zipped, rather wasteful if your only interested in a two or three minute section in the middle of it. Yes you could make a movie of it instead, but you lose the ability to change viewing position and really get a feel for what's happening. I know I can re-record the track and save it with new view positions, but what it really needs is a way to cut-out the beginning and end sections of a recorded track and save it as a much shorter track with just the section of interest (and a much smaller file size)? It doesn't need to be complicated, the film view in Aces High was similar, you just moved the slider along at the bottom to the position you wanted to start from and clicked delete to remove the initial section, play the film to the position you wanted to finish, paused and clicked delete to remove everything after before saving. The other function I greatly miss is the ability to add 'trails'. These greatly enhanced the ability to analyse what was going on in fight afterwards and make training videos.
Freycinet Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Superb tips and hints there, Sid: thank you so much! I learnt that I can offset the exterior view, which is crucial for moviemaking. Too bad it doesn't work (yet...) in the external padlocked view. In CoD you can offset the plane near the camera, which is great. Unfortunately you cannot offset the far-away plane, which always remains in the center of the shot.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted December 27, 2013 Author Posted December 27, 2013 (edited) I really like the trails. It would be VERY beneficial as I am interested in starting a dedicated training server as well.........once the full version is launched of course. Also, it would be nice if you could designate separate colors for each of the aircraft trails. Red on red could be hard to follow for the uninitiated - especially in .gif form. Glad you found it useful, obviously still in 'Alpha' but I hope to keep it up to date and add some more info as we progress. I really like the trails. Yes, different colours would be great, although even just the same as the red and blue icons would be a big improvement over just red. Edited December 28, 2013 by =AH=_Sid_
