Hello,

Oculus Rift ASW (Asynchronous Space Warp, default behavior) does not behave properly because of the propeller. Everything is perfect outside the range of the propeller, but inside the range propeller things are jumping around as soon as FPS goes a little bit low. It is a shame because without this issue VR would be perfect.

I know that their has been some anwers about this topic but I am not happy with them:

- Deactivating ASW works, but I don't want to do that. ASW does an almost perfect job making everything smooth at 45 FPS. Without ASW I experience stutters and I hate that.

- Reducing details works, because you will get a nice constant 90 FPS so no need for ASW and no need for ASW. Well with a 1080Ti maybe but with my 1070 not always. Even at low details I sometimes experience the propeller bug. And I really don't want to sacrifice all the details just because of that (and on my config changing details seem to make little difference in terms of FPS, maybe it is CPU bounded).

So if someone has an actually good solution it would be nice to give it to me, otherwise I suggest an option to remove the propeller effect. Even though the propeller effect is nice we can live without it. Even better, make a new one, maybe not as nice as the current one, but ASW compatible (maybe just a slightly flickering semi-transparent disc). But if you don't have time for that just make it possible to remove it completely.

Thank you.

The ASW is a technology developed by Oculus to "invent" or "infer" intermediate frames at 90Hz but rendering at 45Hz. The underlaying technology to infer how objects move and predict where they will be is complex. It works well in most of the cases, but with fast moving objects there are some strange effects. I believe IL-2 is not the only game suffering from this.

So, the problem is not in IL-2, but in how good the ASW technology is.

Since ASW tech is out of control of IL-2 devs, therefore, the only thing they could do is your suggestion to implement an optional transparent disk propeller for VR which doesn´t suffer from this.

Another option as suggested by Fenris is to run always at 45Hz with ASW off (Ctrl+Numpad2). I still have not the chance of try it:

About your best and only bet currently to get rid of the graphic anomaly when ASW kicks in, is to disable ASW.

Not sure what your system specs are, I would try to adjust settings to get a smooth experience with ASW disabled. I have found on my rig I can run with ASW off and get a very smooth experience, even when frames dip down into the 60's during heavy combat.

It is also not prone to just Il-2, DCS suffers the same affect as well when ASW kicks in.

It must not be an easy thing to get rid of, if it was I am sure both devs would have already done so.

OK thanks for the link and suggestions. I tried locking at 45 Hz, it is fine but not as smooth as 90 (obviously). In particular it gives the feeling of seeing moving objects twice, slightly shifted. Interestingly I remember the exact same issue  when I was a kid on Amiga games, where some games were running at 50 Hz (native monitor resolution) and others 25 Hz, and you could see the same double image effect.

I might just let the standard config with deactivated ASW. But it is a shame, because it does a very good job outside the propeller range.

Alternatively I can switch off the engine, but it is just a short term solution.

   Yeap!  this for sure works. You can do that to recreate the last scene of Dunkirk movie...

Lefuneste wrote a mod to solve this issue (and some other others). It works great.

Apparently it costs something significant amount of RPM unfortunately. But I think it is worth it as long as you can maintain 45 fps.

With Ctrl-Numpad 3 (locked at 45 FPS adn ASW on) and Shift-k (deactivate propeller effect with the mod above), the result looks perfect to me. ASW makes 45 FPS looking perfect.
