AI Issues

Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong area but, I could not find where it should go.

I have a couple of issues with the AI which I have run across so far.

1.)  Twice now my rear gunners have fired upon friendly planes resulting in me incurring a penalty. Is this a glitch in the programing or is it just bad timing on the part of friendly pilots who carelessly fly into the firing path of my rear gunners while they are busy shooting at an enemy. I always give the order for my rear gunners to "shoot at will" at enemy planes.

2.) My second issue with AI is with AI fighter pilots. When on a mission, with a designated target (i.e. attacking bombers or attack planes), the AI fighters consistently shoot down the targets before I can even get to them to shoot down myself. Rather then going after other enemy fighters to keep them away from me while I fulfill my mission of shooting down a bomber or attack plane - the AI fighters go directly after the bombers or attackers. This has cost me more then a few air victories. Can the AI fighters be programmed to be not so aggressive?

Thank you

So you want your AI comrades to stay with you and cover your ass while you fulfill the mission, score the kills and get all the glory?

Actually, that’s exactly how most of the high-scoring aces of WW2 operated. You have the right kind of mindset to be the next Hartmann/Kozhedub, just keep at it.

Seriously though: in most campaign missions as a fighter, I usually score 3-5 kills while the rest of my flight shares a few kills between them. I think it is just about practice, practice, practice. If you take too long to shoot down an enemy, either you will get shot down by one of his comrades of your comrades will come along and shoot him down for you. Close the deal quickly to get your kills.

I suppose, your mistake is, you attack the nearest target. This is exactly what AI does. Go for an enemy that is a little further away and let your AI comrades attack the nearest enemy. What i do, when the enemy appears, I climb a little, to get a better view of the scenery, and wait which aircraft is attacked by my squadmates, and then attack another one.

To be clear: you won't be the only aircraft in your flight that is tasked with attacking the designated target(s).

If you have a lot of targets (eg 4 airfield ground targets) then this will be of assistance to get the mission completed. If you're attacking specific aircraft like IL-2s then get ahead of the others slightly and hit the targets first.

AI pilots are suppose to be programmed to go after the fighters in order to allow me to fulfill my mission. This is written right into the Mission Brief. But, instead they go after the mission targets I am suppose to shoot down to fulfill my mission. This has caused me in turn to be shot down by the enemy AI as I attempt to fulfill my mission. Either way you look at it - The friendly AI are not doing their job and seriously interfering with me being able to fulfill my mission.

To be clear, we are not talking about a multiplayer mission on some server. I am talking about in the "single missions" or the "campaigns" missions. I am the only human involved in one of these missions. The target planes are all AI. The friendly fighters are all AI. The enemy fighters are all AI. The mission brief clearly states it is my job to shoot down the bombers or the attack planes. I am not to engage the enemy fighters. Therefore, the mission of the friendly AI fighters who are my escort, is to keep the enemy AI off my 6 so that I may fulfill my mission. But they don't. They go right for my targets (bombers or attack planes), and ignore the enemy fighters. This has resulted in me actually being shot down by enemy AI because the friendly AI are already attacking the bombers or attack planes and ignoring the enemy fighters. This has cost me many a match. Even if I survive, I am not credited with fulfilling the mission because the friendly AI have already shot down the planes designated as my target.

My gosh. It is amazing how far out to lunch you are. Amazing.

Er....no.  The friendly AI fighters are not your escort.  They are part of your flight and share your mission goals too.  They are shooting down those targets before you can because - at the moment - they are better than you.

Finkeren's analysis is correct;  more practice.

It is not your personal mission but your entire flight’s. Each of your flight members have the same mission goal as you and will attempt to fulfill it.

If you really want them to sit on your six taking the bullets for you, there is a “cover me” order you can give them in the radio comms. Personally I’d much prefer them to go out and actually be productive, but to each his own.

A suggestion: If your flight mates attack the main target (I assume bombers or attack aircraft in an intercept mission) why don’t you handle the escort fighters then? You’ll still get the kills and if your squad mates are any good the mission will be a success, everybody wins.

It would be great if in campaign mode not only personal kills were recorded, but also the number of aircraft damaged by player, number of aircraft destroyed by AI mates, and number of aircraft lost by the player's flight. Such a squad balance would give a more adequate overview of the player's achievements and would enforce a better care for teamwork. Overall squad kills and shared kills (damaged by player and shot down by AI) should as much add to the score as AI planes safely returning to base, while kill-stealing (damaged by AI and shot down by player) as well as lost AIs should affect the score negatively. I hope some of these aspects will come with the new career mode.

I think that is likely to be part of the career. Whats happening with the existing campaign, is it being replaced by the career or as well as the career ?

I don't think there have been any definitive official statements, however based on just some comments in the past it has the appearance of likely replacing the current stock campaign system.
