Trooper117 Posted December 10, 2017 Posted December 10, 2017 Flight Sim World have released the P-40...
Jade_Monkey Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 They mention how they included pilot's accounts and not just the manual specs for speed. That's a hot topic for the P40 in IL2. I hope the P39 is not as strict in that regard. The P40 is practically useless, i dont even know why i take it out for a spin anymore.
Feathered_IV Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I don't touch Il-2's P-40 either. It's only good for screenshots. If it is true to life, then it is surely one of the most ineffective aircraft of WW2.
Hoss Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 As soon as he said merlin engine in front of you instead of Allison I stopped watching it...............
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 As soon as he said merlin engine in front of you instead of Allison I stopped watching it............... There was a P-40 equipped with a Merlin engine, presumably that's the one they're modelling.
Legioneod Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 As soon as he said merlin engine in front of you instead of Allison I stopped watching it............... P-40F and P-40L both used Packard built Merlins.
Danziger Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Yeah supposedly the models before and after the E model were great and the one we got was the worst performing P40.
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 We got the most widespread one, for better or worse. No P-40 was objectively great relative to the opposition, but they were all OK in capable hands working together. Having that degree of symbiotic cooperation is extremely rare online, however.
Dakpilot Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 We got the one that was used at the end of the Moscow campaign and at Stalingrad, of all the P-40's that 'grew the legend' ours was probably the least effective regardless of all the hard work and useful service the E model and its pilots gave. The success of US pilots in Mediterranean was initially mostly with Merlin engines, those being in the P-40's first deployed there Cheers, Dakpilot

To restrictive and unrealistic, if not for the gimp engine the P-40 would perform much better in-game.
Royal_Flight Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 That video makes it look really appealing. It looks like it could be a P-40F as it doesn't appear to have the extended tailfin, although I didn't get a good enough look from the video. But yeah, bittersweet as it reminds you of the massive engine modelling-shaped shortcoming in 'our' P-40. We did get the version with the lowest power-to-weight ratio, but even still it should be better performing as has been mentioned millions of times by people with better access to the facts than me, the engine limits are far too conservative. It's a fun experiment to take the P-40 up for a spin in easy mode with no engine limits and see what it can do if you get more than five mins at combat power... Would have been good to have got a Tomahawk IIA (P-40B) because I've always thought the earlier models look much more aggressive, and would have been lighter so better performing. But hey, I've dragged the thread miles off-topic. Apologies 1
Trooper117 Posted December 13, 2017 Author Posted December 13, 2017 I'm with you on the early P-40B... it was one of my favourites in the old IL2
