US pilots shooting enemy on parachutes...

Recommended Posts

I just read DD 180 and i found this in Laszlo Molnar overview ". He managed to leave the plane, but was killed by American fighters while descending on a parachute. In that battle, P-51 pilots mashinegunned another Hungarian pilot who had parachuted, János Nyemecz..."

My question is why we read so many cases of US pilots shooting enemy pilots on parachute?...Because so far as i know shooting enemy on parachute was unthinkable for Luftwaffe pilots,i also did not recall so many cases of Soviet pilots shooting German pilots on parachute...So why this disgusting practice(basically a murder)was so "normal" for US pilots?

Plain and simple it was not the standard.  You listed one example and then followed it with "we read so many examples" List 20 examples then we can discuss? I think all sides had the most respect for airmen.

This again...

Sure, you can find "black sheep" in every family or group of people, but i just recall reading about US pilots shooting enemy on parachute,a lot more than any other nation, for some reason.

Might be a matter of numbers. If you have 20 German pilots against 500 American pilots, the likelihood of a bloodthirsty one being among 500 is higher than among 20. It only takes one to kill a defenseless pilot.

IF you do a real research, you will find out, THIS was the common command for the US pilots in that time. It was easier for them, because they didnt had to face the same pilot once more. Yes, this happened several times, with several US pilots.

If you dont belive me, read the exact sources, then come back.

This subject pops up each and every time.

Be it chutekilling in game or in wartime.

And each and every time people respond by saying that this subject has been beaten to death already.

Don't be suprised if after a while you see this left of topic title:

It happened in the Pacific. A theater without mercy.

Story in "The First Blue" about an Enterprise pilot coming back with Japanese parachute risers trailing from his airplane after he rammed a descending pilot's chute.

This happened both ways, and morality aside, it is a pragmatic matter. Takes a lot longer to train a combat capable pilot than it does to build an airplane. If you go for the cockpit, there is no need to strafe a parachute.

Today, there is no time for such silliness, and pilots are more respectful for a number of reasons.

As far as this thread. It happened on all sides, nothing will change that, so there is little point in discussing this from a peace time looking glass sitting on a high horse pretending that global unrestricted war that bombed civilians as a matter of routine was somehow chivalrous.

Wars are usually very large armed robberies with a whole lot of murder thrown in. No point in softening it or making it what it isn't. War is death and pain and famine and disease.

That someone "mowed a chute" is the smallest of raindrops in the worst of hurricanes.

Well, a ways back we had this whole discussion abut the honorable thing to do..

You downed the machine, why kill the man hanging from silk?

Ya, they're defenceless, and out of the fight. I myself do not shoot the chute...

But in the days of war, you may have taken the aircraft down... then they'll come back and take down a bomber tomorrow..

So while you may have spared their life, they take 8 souls.

You hope that if you spare them they will spare the bomber crew...

Over your own soil, perhaps the enemy pilot would get picked up by your countrymen for information...

But over their territory they jump into another plane. They know your tactics, they know your aircraft. What do you do? What choice do you really have?

I am completely against this.. in game I really don't think it's necessary, I find it to be like taunting or "tea-bagging".

But when it comes to real life, I'd suppose it's the better choice of the two evils....

Sorry if my writing is random.. Please don't be angry, I'm just posting the logical point of view, I'm on to 23 hours awake now looking forward to my bed...

I get this, but kill somebody on a parachute is same thing in my eyes as shoot captured soldier, very disgraceful thing to do,...of course war is horrible and no fair thing with very harsh rules sometimes, i get that too...but still, shoot someone on parachute seems so wrong, even in the heat of battle,it just strike me that this was ''common'' practice(as somebody pointed above),or even "legal" thing.

I personally agree on the point that killing a fighter-pilot on his parachute is equal to killing a captured soldier. But I got a different opinion about bomber crews, strategic bomber crews to be specific.

For example, axis countries in late 44-45 had to deal with frequent bombings on civilian targets. So if I were for example a german pilot I'd probably shoot any parachuting bomber crews,

due to them destroying my home and killing thousands of civilians.

And that enemy pilot hanging in his parachute that just sent your wingman to a horrible fiery death trapped in his cockpit is different how?

And why single out the US?   The Poles were the master practitioners of the parachute kill,  go pick on them for a change.
