Also, as you can see at the edge of my picture, I sometimes have textures going all pink, mainly the gunsight or some cockpit glass. I don't know if it' a know issue.

It is totally normal because this version of the mod is in "hunting" mode, that is you can use left/right or up/down arrow to select shader to dump. The selected shader is colored in pink.

The hunting mode introduce also great fps losses.

Because of identification issues?

If so, really, Lefuneste tool is looking awesome in that regard, and proving it's probably simply a question of having the correct zoom level in a VR headset (ie, the one that gives you resolution at range that is equivalent to the resolution on a flat screen with max zoom). When doing so, you can ID planes as good as on a screen.

Here is a version that allows to shift the mask used when zooming : http://www.mediafire.com/file/qrtvukhvt2eehlt/3Dmigoto_VRBOS_5.4.zip

Now y6 only is used for shifting the view when in zoom, and x7 is used to shift the mask. I also make sign of shift coherent:   positive to shift right eye to the right and left eye to the left, so x6 value must be positive now.

By the way, the problem with the shores on Kuban map is fixed in this version.

It is true that a good resolution is really missing. I always regret it when using my screen to debug the mod...but I can not go back, not for the 3D because 3Dvision nearly gave it years ago, but for the real scale and head mapping...

Half of the graphic quality of Bos disapears when playing in VR..And the SDE make farther things hard to understood...you always have to zoom...

I'm waiting for the next gen VR now (I hope Pimax 8K will do it).

It definitely is a big trade off, and the weakest point for current gen VR is resolution. That said, even with the resolution as it is I can't really fly with a monitor any more, it just doesn't immerse me like VR does. I've kind of come to accept that flying in VR currently requires icons of some kind, and I find that to work okay. Although I do wish IL2 BoS gave more options for some icons that behaved more realistically ...

I'm beginning to think that the technology just isn't there yet.  Played yesterday on my monitor after a few days on my new Rift...Thinking about sending it back.

Back when I got my Rift in mid Jan of 2017, I had a couple of feelings initially with it.

When I first launched DCS ( BoS did not have VR at that time), I was completely overwhelmed by the feeling of actually being in the cockpit, and everything being virtually life sized. Anywhere I looked, I saw the world all around me. I was completely blown away.

Then, once I started flying, I was somewhat underwhelmed by how the landscape and objects at a distance looked. But I continued to fly with it, and in a few days the immersion really took over for me and I was hardly noticing the lack of detail that I was seeing.

When we were close to 2.009 being released for BoS with VR support, I launched BoS on my monitor to set up my controls and test them flying on the monitor. Now then, I had a very much underwhelming experience, much more than my initial feeling when I first got into VR. I found out then, that my gaming on the monitor days were pretty much over. I got my controls all setup and then just patiently waited for 2.009. Once it became available, then very quickly the vast bulk of my gaming time became flying BoS in VR. There is no telling how many hours I now have in it in VR.

Certainly not everyone's experience is going to be the same it is very much a personal preference issue more than anything. There will be some like myself, there will be some that can take it or leave it, then some that want nothing to do with it at this time due to it's weaknesses.

For me, having the Oculus Rift plus a good HOTAS setup along with Voice Attack is just sim Nirvana.

Not just for the identification issues but just the general poor visual quality and the SDE.  I've improved the look as much as I can without dropping below 45 frames per second and still it really bothers me.  OTOH;  I love the feeling of flight and the scale of everything.  I also feel it will be much better w/ WWI fighters because of the lack of cockpit glass.  The I16 is the best looking ride with the rift.  I don't know, I keep going back and forth here.

Hello Lefuneste.

Sorry for the longest than expected time it took.

I tried for very long to tinker with values to get zoom working at w=10, I couldn't find a correct setting that didn't end with HUGE black bands that render the thing unusable.

this is how it looks at w=5, y6=0.6 :

B0W7Coy.jpg

That's the most I could get while keeping the thing usable, more black band and it's too much.

But with this, and only x5 zoom, it's an absolute game changer in terms of identification and it pretty much removes any ID issue existing in VR. Your tool is god sent, tbh. Thanks A LOT!

Just a thought: What if we change value only for one eye to keep it completely black, and leave the other eye untouched. Will it eliminate double vision and reduce brightness? Or at least close black screened eye to be able to use x10 zoom.

Is there a way to set this zoom for joystick button?

Honestly, x5 is what we need as a zoom factor for proper identification, in line with what can be achieved on flat screens. I don't think we need x10

So if you want this zoom feature and nothing else, what is the current fps penalty vs vanilla BoX? Roughly?

@Fenris, are you running this online? Think I remember you mentioning testing performance with it.

There is no such differences on fps linked to features activated. Most of the fps loss is linked to the 3dmigoto usage, and there will be soon a new version that will reduce fps impact (in fact the new version is here but it does not work on some game like Il2 on win 10. I can not tell you how much it cost on fps, because it depend of config. On my config I did not manage to see the differences, but on the 3dmigoto topic some reported going from 90 to 70...

That could he done, but I had to set up again a dedicated  shift variable for left and right eye. It will not reduce brightness, just display a black view on one eye.. I am not sure that it will be very confortable...

3dmigoto does not handle joystick so you'll have to bind the key to your button with he software suite you should have for it...

I see. 20 is a rather large hit in multiplayer. Very interested in hearing about your progress with the new version.

Also, did I mention this before?

How would folk feel if we could have friendly Icons at any skill level (to simulate radio comms/awareness etc) but no enemy icons?

This would eliminate the worry about friendly fire but still allow you or the enemy to surprise eachother.

I've not measured anything, but I felt zero FPS loss (online included) when using the "non hunting" version (the latest versions posted by Lefuneste have a special "hunting" mode activated that costs FPS, you can disable this in config file)

What I don't understand is how to have a seperate zoom to look at your cockpit gauges?

Posted

Also, the game starts up fully zoomed.. how do I have the zoom be 'selectable' ??

That is odd.

Have you assigned VR Zoom to a button on your stick/throttle?

Mine does the same, and I'm not using VR. I just zoom all the way back out when starting every time.

I am assuming he is talking about zoom in VR, as he is posting in the VR forum.

It should definitely not start fully zoomed in.

Maybe, but we're talking about two different zoom functions.

VR zoom is quite different than regular zoom for monitor users.

For optimal useage for Oculus Rift CV1 users:

[Key1]
;set high zoom on
Key = no_ALT no_shift no_ctrl VK_UP
type = hold
; modify here the first value you want to use for zoom increase
w = 3.0
y6 = 0.3
x7 = 0.0
y7 = 0.0

[Key2]
;set  zoom on
Key = no_ALT no_shift no_ctrl VK_DOWN
type = hold
; modify here the first value you want to use for zoom increase
w = 1.5
y6 = 0.07
x7 = 0.0
y7 = 0.0

Now put VR Zoom on both of the same keys. You will have 3.5x zoom and 5x zoom, like a monitor user.  I have two joystick buttons to zoom with, one for 3.5x and one for 5.0x

The higher zooms I do not recommend due to movement induced flicker.

I get these annoying camera vibrations with the 3x zoom. Not sure if it's my trackers, me developing parkinsons or just in-game engine vibrations? Anyone else experiencing this?

5.0x? Is that 3x migoto stacked with vanilla VR-zoom? Have yet to try going higher than 3x migoto.

i'm going to try this and will feedback as other settings don't seem to work for me//my eyes

Also can anyone explain how to make joytokey work?

i cant get it to respond and i'd rather have my zoom on me HOTAS.

I'm trying to apply it to my Pushdown grey hat on my Warthog (think its button18)

Run joytokey as admin. Also check correct boxes in the joytokey settings.

Also, make sure you have the correct number of joy sticks in the JoyToKey options (highlighted in red box):

When you press the button on your stick that you want to map, it should highlight in the right side panel. Check each of the sticks to make sure its the one you want to map.

I'm beginning to think that the technology just isn't there yet.  Played yesterday on my monitor after a few days on my new Rift...Thinking about sending it back.

It's not that the technology isn't there I think it's just whether a person is willing to sacrifice his competitive edge online for the sake of immersion. You would have had a hard time spotting enemies in a real spitfire during world war 2!

I don't have a problem spotting enemies. German planes are mostly flat and square, but what I do generally in MP is get on someones tail first and if he's an enemy fire away and if he's a friendly disengage. That's probably not a method that's going to help me in a competitive environment, but that's really not why I fly anyway. Win or lose, above all else, I love the immersion.

I have to protest though its not that spotting is not possible in VR only that it's easier on a monitor with track IR.

One day soon everyone will be in VR hopefully and everybody will be in the same boat.

Spotting is definitely easier in VR, especially with the large scaling of other aircraft when flying with 0 SS setting, AA4 and sharpen. But the picture looks like a mess like this, so it's not feasible.

The problem is that increased SS further reduces the size of dots at 5km range, so much that it may just become 1 or 2 blurry pixels at max range. Well, Monitor users are also hunting single pixels at range by the way.

Identification is harder without lefuneste's fixes in VR. But you can use his migoto fixes, and increase contrast to w6 = 1.1, and finally keep gamma in game at 1 (no need to lower it anymore), and then use the zoom to ID earlier. I get around the same identification range as on my 4k monitor when using 5x zoom in VR.

In SP I do use labels to be honest (set to a button). In MP well I don't find identification that difficult either but to be honest the only MP server I have access to is a bit of a claustrophobic death match with everyone on top of each other anyway. There I just go by the shape of the plane which serves me pretty well, although I get shot down 99.9 percent of the time so maybe not haha!
