Object Markers?

I'm currently using Object Markers "on" and sometimes there is a bracket around an enemy, how do I control this, I'm not sure how/why it selects the "target" that it does. Thanks.

The bracket marks your primary target. Depending on the mission it can be the lead aircraft of a flight you need to destroy, a ground target you need to destroy, the lead aircraft of a flight you need to protect or a ground target you need to protect.

In quick mission I think it just marks the leading aircraft of the first flight on the opposing side.
