Will I be able to have 2 installs on the same machine?

Per subject...  I want Win7 install on one SSD and the other SSD to be Win10 with the ability to boot into either and play from whichever OS I want for that day...

Will this work?  Also what files should I port across to the new Win 10 install?  I assume a joystick file at least...

I see no reason for this not to work. Each install of windows would have its own registry to read where the install paths are and shouldnt overlap. You can even have two installed copies on the same OS as it is now so this should be no problem.

Yes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Just install the game on each OS and transfer a few files if you want.

  • startup.cfg for settings
  • input\ for controls
  • Missions\ for missions if you downloaded any
  • snapviews\ for view settings

May have missed something, but that should cover the most important things

From previous experience you can have as many installs as you like, even on the same OS and drive but only one can be logged in at any time

If I copy the sim (non-Steam) to another logical disc (the original install serving as a backup), will the new copy be able to update itself flawlessly? Do I need to change any settings anywhere?

I just copied the entire folder to my SSD and it worked fine.

While experimenting with graphic injectors, sweetfx etc. I had multiple installs, when you log in they will update as normal

That's nice. Which file do you run for the updating, launcher.exe or Il-2.exe?

Dredging up this topic.

I want a separate install of the game for use with VR.  I copied the entire IL-2 folder to the same drive under the same 1C Game Studios folder.  I renamed the copy to "IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad - VR".  The copy won't start however with either the Launcher or the exe.  The Launcher comes up and says Play but when pressed I get a black screen for a second and then it loops back to the Launcher.  The exe gives me the black screen and back to desktop.  Is it a problem with having the renamed folder in the same master folder?

Original location is still working fine.

Any thoughts?

Thoughts? I'd say that it was unwise to have one installation inside another, even if it did seem to work. Too easy for the application (or the updater, which would be worse) to get confused, and start accessing the wrong files. It is highly unlikely that anyone has ever bug-tested that sort of setup, and though ideally an application shouldn't make assumptions about anything it doesn't expect to find, I wouldn't count on it.

Keep it simple. If you are going to have two installs, make them entirely separate.

Thanks Andy,

The folder structure is:

1C Game Studios ________ IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad

                                     |_____ IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad - VR

Each is a self contained folder of all game files, no shared files.  The 1C Game Studios contains no game files, just a header.

I could move it to a Games directory I guess to see what happens.

EDIT:  Moved it to a Games folder and Window kept popping up with a warning.  After a few times of saying allow, it finally started working.
