It’s good, but “The Attackers” by the same company is even better. It is also available on YT.

Well it is good. It’s a complete fiction and not even a very good portrayal of the actual 588th regiment, and it’s not “Breaking Bad” in terms of writing or acting. Still, I found it entertaining and with a certain nostalgic charm.

just saw the first episode, not bad at all, and the pilot chicks are pleasant to the eye :)

Again: Remember to watch The Attackers, after you're done with this. It is about a Yak squadron in  spring/summer 1943 and is pretty exciting and has something of a tear-jerking ending, if you are willing to overlook some fairly shoddy replicas and sub-par CGI dogfights.

I'd pay good money for an Attackers scripted campaign, with the original voice actors delivering the radio chatter.    :)

Yep, and cutscenes as well

Make it happen.

"Night Swallows"? I've always thought they were called the "Night Witches".

It’s not a documentary but a historical fiction. If they had called it “Night Witches” people would have thought, that it was about the actual 588th regiment, and it’s not.

Aha! Thanks.

I watched half the Night Swallows series before switching to The Attackers.   I love the way they have Po-2s taking off and landing from a strip of land about 30m long :-)  They literally swoop down and stop within 20m.    Still, for all its flaws it was a fascinating insight into what was happening as long as you take the plot with a big pinch of salt.     The Attackers is also fun.  Some of the air to air stuff is about as realistic as Thunderbirds and you can see obvious RC models being used for many take-offs but sometimes it looks like they really used Yaks taking off and I am sure they must have shot a lot of the in-cockpit stuff in a real two-seater as you can see the g forces and the ground spinning behind.   It is a shame they did not pay an English speaker a tiny sum just to to skim through the subtitles as often it is obvious what they wanted to say but the translation is clumsy eg Ground control keeps saying things like 'My Name Is Grove' when they mean 'This is Grove;' or 'Grove calling.'  and when the officers dismiss their men they say something like 'You may be free' instead of 'Dismissed' :-)

I have often though there must be a business opportunity there for foreign companies to email you their translated instruction manuals etc so you can just tweak the English.  You do not need to have any knowledge of foreign languages to guess what they meant to say most of the time.   My wife is currently in China on business and will be travelling inland on South China Airways and I pretty sure that is the same airline that famously gave all their passengers a card saying WTTE "In the unlikely event that we fail to reach land before crashing please use your cushions as lifejackets and use the complimentary biscuits as shark repellent"

I am hoping what they really meant was "Your cushions can be used as flotation aids and we have provided shark repellent tablets"  Just needs a tiny tweak :-D

A tweaked version would not be half as poetic as is the untweaked one

Don't you work something like 3-4 weeks and then about the same off work? So late to work what's that for you, Luse; several hours, days, a week?

Yeah, I actually like some of the oddities in the subtitles. Really gives you a sense, that they say certain phrases differently in Russian.

What you mean is "flavour" or "couleur locale". Reminds me of my conversations with my Polish or Slovakian friends in either German or English in phrases that no one else except us would understand. My favourite is "Bill of Fares" understood as "Menu" in a restaurant. :)

Watched this and the attackers. Though the practical effects and props like the home made planes give away the low budget, the characters do a good job of drawing you into the story. What really pisses me off is they don't caption the last episode of the attackers... I see what happened but who the hell knows what they said. My Polish is ok enough to pick out a few Russian words here and there but the captions would be nice.

Odd.  It had English subtitles for me.

Yeah I had to watch it again online for subtitles to work. Apparently they didn't download with the video.
