Please help me tweak my setup and increase my FPS

Hi,

Firstly, despite my low FPS, IL2 is freaking awesome in VR. Jaw droppingly fun and my kill ratio has shot up (not difficult as I was dreadful) but... The low FPS.

I've got the following:

i5-6600K

Win 10
8Gb DDR 4 Ram

GTX 1070

but I'm only getting about 40-60 FPS in my Rift.

I have done the following:

BIOS
XMP enabled

Windows

Enable "Maximum Performance" in Window's energy settings. Go into advanced settings, disable "Allow selective USB suspend".

Checked energy setting on USB controllers

Ingame
Preset High.

HDR off.

SSAO off.

Sharpen off.

AA to 0x.

Mirror to simple or one step higher.

Shadows High.

Terrain Detail 4x.

Target FPS off.

Fullscreen off

Steam:

Steam SS to 3.2  (this replaces ingame AA and Sharpen!)

Advanced SuperSample Filtering off (removes blur and allows better IDing)

Tracking space: Sit/standing place (smallest).

I know I'm limited by the CPU but I was hoping for slightly more than what I'm getting.

And if I have missed an obvious post on what to do, please feel free to point out my error...

Thanks.

good news is you can do some serious tweaking to that over the top setup!

if you want closer to ~70 fps try this:

-balanced settings** (fps boost but ugly storm clouds)

-sharpen on

-shadows low or medium if you must **

-mirror off **

-terrain detail 2x max**

I use steam vr beta and have ss at 1.7

and of course OC that processor

Press H to double your FPS!

OK, it's an exaggeration, but if you aren't doing it already, do it. That will give you a noticeable boost. Bind it to an easily accessible button/key and you can quickly turn it on/off when you hear the message notification to keep track of what's happening and what people are saying.

You might want to rethink using such a high Steam SS setting, too.  On my rig testing revealed a pretty significant FPS drop-off between 2.3 and 2.6 even on my 1080 TI (and getting progressively worse going higher), so I always run at 2.3.  Running yours at 3.2 on a 1070 may be costing you quite a few FPS.

Thats what I run. 90 most of the time, really really busy airpace, 50-60.

OTT SS is set to 1.4

The 3.2 SS only makes sense on a more powerful graphicscard. I did extensive testing of SS effects on performance as well, I barely get a dent into performance with a GTX1080 and my other settings until reaching 2.9. The fps-drop some report earlier must be tied to another setting in combination with high SS. Maybe they have higher mirror settings, shadows settings, or AA active, who knows. However: Activating "Sharpen" increases image quality by a bit, but seriously nerfs your spotting ability when you're scanning from 5km, looking for targets on the deck.

Everything is a tradeoff.

I recommend getting a program to log your GPU stress, and then probably lowering SS by a bit to 2.3 or 2.4. Should still be reasonable with the 1070. And don't forget that HUD, like the others mentioned.

Thanks everyone.

@katdog5: I ran through your settings and that made a huge difference.

@coconut: I already had the map off but I have now mapped it and the ID to joystick buttons.

@TG-55Panthercules: Thanks, will lower it a bit tomorrow and see how I fare
@CptJackSparrow: That's good to know, thanks.

I will OC my CPU soon but I'm struggling with the card recognising my monitors reliably so there are lots of reboots, slow reboots and boots with no monitors at all so I'm loathed to add something else to the mix until I can reliably get all 3 monitors coming on.

In other news. This game is insanely good in VR. I just spent ages moving my head closer to the bullet holes in the canopy and looking out of the flare tube.

Ok it's harder to identify targets but it is so much easier to hit them. I've gone from taking multiple passes to decently hit an HE 111 to hitting two in one pass tonight and downing all 3 in my quick mission. Loving it.

You run VR with how many monitors?  :o:

I pull out all of them, and only keep a single small one connected, while playing VR. My 4k goes to take a break usually..

P.S. I got a very old 4:3 with a DP-to-DVI cable just for this  :salute:

I hadn't thought about the monitors. Right now I'm struggling to get them all detected without using VR and just a normal 2D desktop. Worked fine with my 960 card but this 1070 has been no end of trouble. Not sure if it is hardware or drivers.

Might stick my 960 back in with the same driver and see what happens. If it works, I suppose it's the card.

So in VR, should I turn them off or unplug them?

That's another thing you can do. 1 screen, "windowed" not full screen and 1024x

Yeah I'm with you on the HE111s. Awesome

With a 1070 you should not go above 1.7 SS in SteamVR. Here you will see the impact of SS on performance:

Also, OC is a must if you want good fps with your CPU.

We elaborated a procedure to test the performance of the rigs in VR, so you can do the right tweaks to have max fps. You only need to read the first post:

Question:

I7 4Ghz CPU

GTX 970 GPU

8GB RAM

The internet says that is good enough to run Rift, but then caveats by saying it depends on the game.  Opinions on running BoX with Rift on this setup?

It will run it , VR performance in BoS is pretty good with the implementation they have done for it.

Certainly a 10 series card would be better, like a 1070.

What CPU do you have? If a K version you may have some room for overclocking with a decent cooler.

Pat, I'm probably the lucky owner of one of the lowest performing PCs around here (I7 3930K OC@4.3Ghz, el cheapo GTX 1060, 16 Gb 1866 MHz RAM) but I can run smooth as butter at 90 fps, both SP and MP, provided that HUD is off, graphics preset is LOW, shadows are off, terrain 3x, SS no greater than 1.5 and in game AAx2.

Gauges are readable, the game looks good and spotting is fine. I agree with dburne that a 10 series card would be a good choice.

I will upgrade in the future, but there's no hurry :)

yes. very enjoyable with cloudless skies, minimal planes,

w minimal settings as above

however, any big scripted campagins with weather, smoke, ground battes, tons of planes etc. not so much.

of note: clouds looks awful in the low and or balanced settings.
