Pros:

Great sensation of moving through the air and not in a void space. This alone paid the game.

I approve of the weapons' lethality, good shots count.

Much less demanding in stable flight than expected even in a non-auto LaGG.

As average pilot I managed to get kills is both the available fighters, so I don't see such a disadvantage as many claimed on the forum.

AI seems good enough to put up a fight, even though AI 109s fly better than Soviet counterparts.

I appreciate details like the small delay in trigger-switch/guns-fire. Says a lot about you Devs.

Questions:

Is it normal all that air sound inside the cockpits of closed canopy planes ?

All that snow is going to be final ? Without grass/mud/earth patches outside settlements ?

I agree with ya on motion feeling.

Be it cameras, models or else it really "clicks" to make a great flying experience.

Better than anything before.

Also weapons. Although perhaps not the best, I really am much more satisfied with this than the situation we had in old IL-2

However I think I'll just disagree with you about LaGG.

I flew Lavochkins quite a bit in IL-2 and Bf-109s too.

They were my fav planes because I find them similar a lot.

But there was noticeably less discrepancy in performance between this S29 and F4 in old 1946.

F4 was a better plane even then, no question about it.

Nowadays that discrepancy in only higher, but I'm afraid it reached such level that you will mostly just die in clashes with similarly skilled 109 pilots.

- Me-109F4 is much better plane all around.

- Ai in the current state of game is a mere target drone even on ace level.

I can make short work of them in LaGG without probs.

All I have to do is climb to 1500-2000 prior to combat and enter fight at that altitude.

E/A flies much lower and doesn't extend away from me (Me-109) thus presenting itself as a target.

About sound... I wouldn't comment much on that maybe it's possible that your canopy had few holes from bullets?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if that is modeled as well.

No bullets, that's the first thing noticed when I took off the very first time.

About the planes I submit to better judgement from more experienced pilots, as I also lost a LaGG to a BnZ 109 AI that extended each time I managed to evade a boom.

I have a feeling it is going to be all snow, but I would love to see some mud patches. I'm not to bothered about grass since you don't see much of that in heavy snow, but mud would be good. Would like to see maybe the Tanks leaving mud trails, but I doubt it's going to happen. Maybe someone who knows could answer the Mud question though.

after first try;

pros: good feel of speed on level flight

nice fm, specially stalls

solid performance, though i had serious slowdowns and heavy pauses near explosions ( when plane crashes). That is in SP.

Nice gun sounds, though maybe a bit too loud from closed cockpit

Very nice external models and engine sounds

Tree collisions, a must in every serious sims

cons; cockpits....they are even less detailed than in ROF...F4 cockpit....at first I had a feeling im in modded il2 46

pitch behaviour....planes are too nervous on pitch...even with adjusted pitch curve and trim it still wobbles too much....why thers no detailed curves with dot points as in ROF btw?

even default skins are slow loading...both in game and in the hangar

PS: I expected much harder landings and taking off (full real setttings)....but had zero troubles there...dunno its because of years of simming or......hmmm

Weird thing about the sounds.

Then again I have two small children and don't really pump up the speakers, so I may get the same issue without even knowing it  .

About mud patches... I'd love to see that plus (off) roads that go muddy after all those mechanization, tanks etc. pass thru them...

That would be historical! :)

btw how do i join mp?....I have only missions in main menu...and that is sp i believe,,,,

I think we don't have MP yet.

No MP yet but it is high on their to do list. According to the latest dev blog, we'll be getting the IL2, Ju-87 and MP soon-ish (probably over the course of January but just a guess).

I got things set up and flew  the Lagg first time last night and I was simply impressed for a sim at 35 % completion to have this much realism ( as far as aircraft handling goes ). The first thing that impressed me was in taxiing out and making turns , just as in real life, once you initiate the turn you will need to counter with opposite rudder to keep from overshooting your turning point, you can tap the brakes but you don't won't to keep wearing those brakes so you just compensate accordingly with rudder pedals.. On take off the torque gets your attention and I really like the way this is modelled. The plane in flight flew well and I was again impressed with how the plane felt ( if you will ) in flight,ie , to me it handled some pretty basic maneuvers ( IMO ) well, but the really good thing to me was that I could feel the weight of the plane ( if that makes since ) in the maneuvers. It was not like in a lot of sims where the plane just has a methodical envelope of speed, and stalls, etc,, I could feel the plane more realistically here than in any other sim I have flown and this was quite impressive---well done BOS TEAM !!!!!!!!!!  Landing was equally a great experience, again, this is what I would have imagined a aircraft like this would have sort of handled in real time. The speed bleeds off relatively fast when power is pulled back, the planes response to flaps felt right, and I even found my self walking the rudder pedals to keep tracking straight once on the ground and applying a bit of brake ( pretty darn real in my book ). When the rest of the 65% of this sim shows up I think this is going to set new boundaries for realism and will give the competition out there something to be concerned with.

Again great work and I just wish I could have contributed more financially to this endeavor, I will make up for it in spirit and support. Also--Happy Holidays all !!!!!

Cheers--sf

Tanks leaving muddy trails depends on temperature. In late winter/early spring they may, but in minus 30 cenigrades in the dead of winter, tank tracks will be snowy. I spent winter in the North of Norway while in the army, and saw plenty of non-muddy tracks, from a variety of belted vehicles, including Leopard tanks.

It was just discovered that burning vehicles can met the snow around them though, making a muddy patch, which is way cool!

This I must say could be improved and much. Really the "fake" impression I got from it has been compensated by the LaGG's.

Really enjoying what we've got so far. The only let down has been the quality of the '109 cockpit which is surprising given how good the LaGG is and the sheer beauty of 'pits in RoF.  Hopefully this will be sorted while we're still in alpha.  The rendering of the '109 'pit at night is pretty good;

2013_12_22__3_0_11.png

Day time is a bit meh.......

2013_12_22__2_55_59.png

The amount of wear on painted metal surfaces seems excessive and the rendering seems no where near as complete as the LaGG.  I don't think the weather - or lack of weather - helps at the moment.  Everything is bathed in this glaring, naked sunlight.  I'm sure changes to time of day and overcast will help.

And whats with the bombing panel we now have when selecting bombs?  Is this part of the unlocks?  Select guns only and its gone again.

My only gripe so far.

So you guys think cockpits are not the final versions in the sim? I believe they told us that effects and FMs are not 100% done....nothing about cockpits...

No, we hope, cockpits are not final.

I'm afraid they are...

The 109 graphic modeller guy will not remake his already work done IMO.

But reflective glass on the dials has already been seen in pre alpha-release videos, so that will probably be put back in at a later point. :)

Very first impressions:

Pros:

-external graphics, lighting

-engine sounds

-sound of wind (when the canopy gets clobbered you can hear the air coming in!!)

-as the OP said: feeling of moving through actual air, not flying on rails in void space.

-Finally a sim where taking off in a 109 is challenging, just like I've read in so many accounts.

-Tiny cracks on cockpit glass

-pilot animation

Cons:

-strange plane behavior (wobbling, strange accelerated stall, lack of feeling of weight)

-Cockpits - yes, unfortunately they don't look as good as the rest of the game. And they make my FPS drop by 10-15. (I noticed that cockpit shadows are darker in CloD, making the whole thing look more 3D)

-special effect graphics, DM, etc...but all these are very WIP as I understand.

- Some instruments still don't work (must be WIP too)

A kind soul in the forums is attempting to sort out my take-offs, but so far hmmm...it's been a hell of an experience.

I'm flying with an Attack 3 Logitech and using the keyboard buttons to control rudder, pitch-settings etcetera. Curiously, no matter my RPM settings, the nose-swing when I apply full throttle always catches me off guard and sends me skittering alluva the place. I understand how power is to be added incrementally and not too sharply; yet nothing works. Now I only get airborne using Auto pilot which has worked once or twice but recently I attempted doing this with the 109 and suffered a terrific crash. I had thought it was okay to take over but the darn beast suddenly nosed over and went straight in. I didn't stand an earthly. I hear CNN covered the crash. Lol!

Anyway, its not been an easy intro for me, though I'm not one to give up too soon. So, there's bound to be more spins at take off and loss of aircraft parts and yes crashes as well, but I'll sure get the hang of things by and by. That is, unless another kindly soul comes to my rescue.

Reflected stated that his fps drop inside cockpit.

This may sound like a longshot, but perhaps they toned them down graphically to improve gameplay?

As I like noob understand it, they are mega-resource eaters.

I would think so too... i still don't get why they went with 32 bit, on the long run its capabilities are very limited...

I'm not too much into programming but I wonder if it would be difficult to change to 64 bit in the release version, someone here got know-how of that?

Btw, reflected: If you plane seems to wobble then that would rather suggest a correct mass calculation, but we had that discussion before..

With keyboard rudder, does it go from 0 to 100% in a second or two? With no possibility to apply less than 100% rudder? Or is it like a "button slider" that lets you tap it to increase rudder step-wise?.

Silver founder and VERY HAPPY with the sim.

Sadly my flying skills would have bankrupted the Luftwaffe, Done 8-10 take off's and landings, only fired at the Horch on the peri track, He's safe...

But I've either ripped off the wheels or the wings or ground looped it. No critisim of the sim, I'll bet it's me. Find it a bit twitchy and bouncy. Was dead chuffed that I landed, so taxi'ed round for another go, and just as I took off, the landing gear decided to depart and stay on the ground LOL!

So had a while of zooms and spin practice...not all intentional and generally thought it was BRILL!

Put it down smoothly next to the Runway.

Last 2 landings were ok, complete plane still there when I switched off...To everyone involved THANK YOU
