Flying the Po-2

I’m very much looking forward to flying the Po-2. While it’s not going to be of interest to everyone, I think it will be a fantastic addition to the IL2 series, with some very interesting missions to fly.

I also hope that we get some female pilot models to go with it, so the “Night Witches” can fly again.

Me too because Po-2 is close to ww1 era kites, and I'm curious how new FM workbench developed for ww2 warbirds would work for biplane.

I love it when a plan comes together.

That video shows why the PO 2 is very important to get, and we need a ME 323 to prove it

We are getting this variant, right?

That was one of the best il2 vids I've seen!

I'm not quite sure I will feel comfortable as a female pilot  .

If you feel comfortable flying as a pilot of a different nation and time period, why not a different gender?

Humans, regardless of gender, are just worthless meat bags fed into the war machine anyway. If you punch a 20mm shell through the abdomen of a young girl, her guts spill out just as well as any guy. No difference really.

We just have to check our "privilege" every now and again mate and get in touch with our feminine side  ;)

If the players in the KV and T-34's are nice to me, I will loiter above those lousy panzers in my shiny Po-2 and guide them into a position to take them out.

Problem is, that on a good day, a T-34 will outrun a Po-2 when driving down a road ;)

It can be solved by dropping an anchor on the T-34 so it can pull the Po-2 .

The player-controlled self-propelled AAA might want a word with you though. A tanker with a good eye could possibly send their high explosive regards your way as well.

In theory it should work out nicely with a group of friends - two in the tank clearing the way, two in Il-2s taking care of flak, and the craziest one droning about in the U-2 looking for tanks at tree-top level. Add another pair of patient fighter pilots with a full fuel tank to babysit the whole group and you can win the map.

That is the combined arms gold standard in my mind. All coordinated via TS.

That would be fantastic. I can imagine the terror that the tankers would experience when they see one of those biplanes circling above.

What I'm looking forward to is the enemy tanks calling for fighter support, and imagining the look on the face of the 109 pilot who dives in at 500kph only to see the Po-2 lazily roll out of the way and disappear.

When attacked by fighters, the Po-2 can simply land and hide near some trees.

I did that several times in Rise of Flight when flying the Re-8.  Still got the screenshots.

I am quite certain that, this being the Soviet Union, all of them will have radios. The PO-2 might need flag signals or some pre-arranged dives and rolls to get the message across.

Depends on the vintage, Hames. There were U-2 variants equipped with radios, and there were tanks equipped with radios too.

On the absence of that however (useful in multiplayer without Teamspeak) shooting a red flare over an enemy position, a green flare over friendlies and a white one when the area is clear suffices.

I hope artillery spotting from RoF makes the jump to BoX and that it gets some attention so that it can work properly in MP. It's a tremendously fun minigame in its own right and could lead to real importance for the Po-2 and similar.

Adding tanks points towards a combined arms interest on behalf of 1C 777, and these types of observation and liaison aircraft would round out the ecosystem nicely, in much the same way that the JU-52 transport has.
