Hi,

What am I doing wrong in this game (multiplayers)?

Each time it's the same thing... I fly high altitude to cover the objectives. After a couple of minutes, people are saying to go in X grid because we have enemies here. I come for help and what happen? The only time I see and start shooting an enemy, I have to be killed instantly. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I see a lot of people shooting without problem and without anyone shooting them back, but the time it's me (and I look every direction to see if nobody follow me), I have to be shot by a random guy who just appeared from nowhere.

Same thing at high altitude. I'm above everyone. I see one enemy contrail bellow me. Only one! I start following and for some reasons, they are now 3-4 enemies following me... And before following the only one enemy, I looked around and I was alone.

Tonight I fly for 2h in Wings of Liberty, saw enemies only 2 times... It was for around 2 minutes each since I'm dying... No luck? noob? I don't know what's going on! Love this game, but it's annoying since bad stuffs are happening everytime. :(

Thank you for helping me!

1) Develop an efficient visual scan pattern

2) Check 6 every few seconds

3) When you see a bandit that you intend to attack, assume he has wingmen, even if you didn't see them, and don't just jump in there because you are bored, but be calculated in your risk-taking.

4) Realize that this game is brutally quick and that wildcard or "free" fighters will see your fight and be there within seconds, so plan your attacks to be quick, and then get out.

5) Don't fall for ruses.  I believe I encountered you on WoL, and you latched onto my six and allowed yourself to be dragged until one of my wingman could bag you.   Fly smart and don't fixate.

6) Consider joining a group of people on comms, or even a squad.  This game is very difficult to go it alone especially if you are new, and when flying as a group you will benefit from the eyes of everyone in the group, and when someone gets on your tail, as by now you know that they inevitably will, you will have someone there to help you out.

7) Practice Practice Practice.  You are fighting against people who have been playing games like this for thousands of hours and when they were new, they had the same frustrations as you did.

Can you expand on that? Any tips?

Can you expand on that? Any tips?

Sure.  I think it isn't so important what your scan method is, but the fact that there is a a method in the first place...so that you aren't just looking around randomly.  It might be as simple as look to the left, check 6, look to the right, check 6, look up above, find your wingman, check 6, check wingman's 6.  And then you keep doing this over and over.

I don't consider myself a very good spotter in this game, but I do try to use some kind of method like the above, and I like to look at a sector of the sky or earth and pause there for just a while and try to pick up movement.  I think these things just improve over time the more you do it.

If you are flying single, it is good to manuever the airplane in such a way that you are constantly checking your blind spots.  If you are in a group, you pick a classic formation like a finger-four so that each pilot can see into the others blind spots.

As I'm writing this I also realize that even though I'm handing out advice, how easy it is to become lax and lazy, and it's something I'm going to make a mental note of the next time I fly, and try to do better at myself.

Wings over Liberty got it all, aces and people wanting fast fun. Very aggressive game play with little to none consideration for objectives. You will meet a mix of squads and lone wolfs. Many lone wolfs are looking for people that  got its attention elsewhere and wham in they go. They fly different strategies depending on situation. There is absolutely no rule of engagement. It is probably the worst server to go lone wolfing in.

Rule number one, go into TS and fine a mate to fly with, number two consider to join a squad, many do not require you to meet up on special days for training if you are afraid of obligation, many are there for having someone to fly with

You are suffering from Dunning-Krueger effect: you do not know how little you know, and you don't understand how much better even the average players on WoL are than you. That's fine, everyone was a noob once, but you have to keep at it.

You can tell noobs apart from experienced pilots even just by watching how they turn their plane, how steady their wings tips are, etc. They are easy kills when you spot one. Decision making especially, "if he even considered doing that, he isn't very good. I can fly sloppy and get a free kill!"

I read it over time again and again.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, in a flight simulator NOBODY is a noob, when I look 2 mins my map and I fly LW everybody can kill me, my expression is that you are still Untrained. :)

I would recommend a server like Action Dogfight. Its not always true but it does tend to have more average skill players. The airfields are basically right on top of each other so you are guaranteed to get into the thick of things within minutes. Lots of lone wolves here and the encounters tend to be less than 4k meters. You can very quickly get lots of gunnery practice and it will force you to look around more because there are constantly aircraft everywhere all around you, some of which are AI aircraft. This is in contrast to WoL where you might fly for 25 minutes seeing nothing and then dying to someone that bounced you from 7k that you never saw. You can easily spend 2 hours in WoL and shoot at someone a single time.
