Legioneod Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I know it's a while away but is anyone else super excited about the P-47 coming in the next expansion? The Jug is my all time favorite aircraft and I can't wait to fly it. I pretty much gave up on the DCS P-47 but now that we are getting a new BoX expansion my dream is coming true to fly a P-47 in a modern flight sim! I do have a few questions and concerns though, like what D variant are we getting? I hope for the D-30. Also how will the damage model be with the Jug? The engine model is my main concern since the PW 2800 was a beast irl, I just hope it will be as durable in-game along with the P-47 itself.
Gambit21 Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Yep Going to be my ride of choice, both for flying and building a scripted campaign around.
Legioneod Posted November 20, 2017 Author Posted November 20, 2017 Yep Going to be my ride of choice, both for flying and building a scripted campaign around. Nice. I dont think I'll fly anything else unless my friend is on (he's a stang jockey). The Jug is great for pretty much anything, has a great bombload for a fighter and is a good dogfighter from the 1st hand accounts I've read.
ShamrockOneFive Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I'm personally a Tempest fan but I see the two in a semi-similar light as being big, tough and mean fighters. The Tempest may be a little more sensitive and agile than the Jug but the Jug is of course a brilliant performer of its own and packs a heck of a punch. It's going to be great to have these both!
Gambit21 Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 It's really hard to beat if you have any interest in mud moving at all. I'm really looking forward to it...not to mention those sexy 9th Airforce paint jobs. I'm personally a Tempest fan but I see the two in a semi-similar light as being big, tough and mean fighters. BlznSaddles Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Yeah this is the one I'm looking for. Always loved the R 2800 engine and first hand pilot accounts of the P47 are very favorable. I remember reading one account of Jug and the pilot was talking about using the service ceiling as a safety zone against enemy fighters. He said he could see the 109's trying to climb up to him but stalling out that high. Just an awesome plane.

I'll be happy to finally have a good high alt fighter for the allied side.
CanadaOne Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I'm far more interested in the P-38, but really, any plane at BOX levels of goodness is great to fly. That said, the P-47 is going to be an awesome ground pounder. 1

Rolling_Thunder Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I'm actually looking forward to the K4. probably the best looking 109, and of course the p47.
katdog5 Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 (edited) cant fing wait...Quentin Aanenson http://www.quentinaanenson.com/ this clip from one of the best documentaries of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Fx9f-ccJu4 If I recall correctly he ran into one of the guys he saved at a party in new orleans and was like oh yeah thats me. epic the full doc used to be online youtube, but i think its down Edited November 20, 2017 by katdog5
Archie Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 My main worry is there's just not going to be enough hours in the day to fly all these awesome planes! I'm looking forward to the 47, but suspect my heart will go to the 38.
Mad_Mikhael Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Can't wait. P-47 is my favourite, Tempest is right behind him. Dear Piston Lord, this expansion will be so good
Finkeren Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Not really. Not a great fan of late war in the first place. The only plane in the announced set that really interests me is the P-38, that and the B-25 of course. The Tempest could be fun, but I never particularly liked in in IL2-1946. The Ardennes map is what really draws me into this.
Bullets Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 8x 50.cal are going to be destructive I am glad we are getting some fast ground attackers with BoOB should make for some interesting missions!
Mysticpuma Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Yes, favourite aircraft ever. Just make sure you fly as a pair to get the best out of it's B'n'Z capability
Uufflakke Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The Ardennes map is what really draws me into this. The Ardennes will not be included on the map. https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/32255-discussion-bodenplatte-flying-circus-and-tank-crew-announcem/?p=533687
HighStick Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Its a heavy beast but still fast, lots of firepower, big bomb load, hard to shoot down too... Going to be one of my favorite a/c along with P-38...
=RvE=Windmills Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Does anyone know what exact models of P47 were present during the operation? It's hard to find even when the different models left the factory, let alone reached the frontline.
BlitzPig_EL Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 While we all drool about the P47's attack abilities, I think it should be pointed out that it's performance at altitude is going to come as a bit of a shock to some of our 109 flying members who are not used to having any sort of competition at the altitudes they normally like to fly at to be "safe".
JG5_Zesphr Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I thought the tempest and p51 were decent high altitude planes as well?

And you thought the luftwhining was bad now.....haha
BlitzPig_EL Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The 51 certainly is. Not really sure about the Tempest. The 47's big advantage is that it is turbocharged, not mechanically supercharged, so it has seamless boost up to it's critical altitude, and if it's a model equipped with the Hamilton Standard "high activity" propeller it will have a really good rate of climb in the mid altitudes. Have to remember that the reason the P51 became so famous is that it had the range to escort the bombers that the 47 lacked. In the scenario we are going to have this won't matter much as the 47s won't be based in England, but really right on Germany's doorstep.
Retnek Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Can't wait. P-47 is my favourite, Tempest is right behind him. Dear Piston Lord, this expansion will be so good I fear the two new beauties will suffer like the fighterbombers already present. Until the the developers and mission builders tame the light AAA in it's present state they are additional cannon fodder.
JG5_Zesphr Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The Tempest seems to be best at about 5500m so it'll be a decent high alt fighter
Dutchvdm Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 (edited) Although my knowledge of American aircraft is a bit limited i'm quite fond of the P-47 and the P-38. Do we get a razorback or a Bubble canopy? The razorback was made until the D-20?.. I would guess the razorback's where faced out by the end of 44..? And this thread needs more pictures. In the scenario we are going to have this won't matter much as the 47s won't be based in England, but really right on Germany's doorstep. Wwiiaircraftperformance.org shows quite consistently that Tempest V gets best performance at around 6km, with 1st supercharger gear also providing very good performance below 3 km. Tempests were employed in both mid- and low-level missions. It's ridiculous at deck, able of hitting about 600km/h at sea level. P-51D seems to generally perform at it's best at around 8km. P-47 goes even higher, with peak performance at around 9500m. I didn't compare climb times because someone else will probably produce a ridiculously detailed breakdown at some point and will destroy my numbers completely. I don't know what kind of dynamic this will create for MP servers. It's sort of weird. Of Allied planeset, P-47D and Tempest V both were heavily employed as strike aircraft after later 1944. While Tempest V does just fine at strike altitudes, the Jug seems to be at a sort of juxtaposition - it can either be utilized as a fighter-bomber down low where it's outperformed by Germans, or as a kick-ass high-altitude fighter at altitudes that do not necessarily function historically in a game that often emphasizes interdiction and bombing. And P-51Ds were also utilized as fighter-bombers, even though I have no idea how common this was during winter 1944-1945. Edited November 20, 2017 by ElPerk
6./ZG26_Custard Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 And this thread needs more pictures. More pictures of some of the aircraft we will receive and some we can dream of getting (Maybe one day!) all set with some appropriate music. 3

This is one of the things I'm most excited about, the Jug is one of the best high altitude fighters and become more maneuverable the higher it gets from what Ive read. Not much can touch the Jug up top, it's real maneuverable and fast up high. Also in response to other post, my bet is we will be getting a later variant of the Jug, probably a D-28 or D-30. A razorback could come later for mid war missions. Edited November 20, 2017 by Legioneod

The P47 can dive and it brings you home with damage that a mustang would not.. but hoping for it to run rings around everyone else.. not really likely to happen.

Never said it was the best dogfighter but people seem to forget that it was first and foremost designed as a fighter and it as good at the role. It was the fastest aircraft in the US arsenal in WW2 (P-47M) and it was maneuverable at high altitudes. Down low it was vulnerable but up high is where it excelled. The mustang took over the escort role from the Jug in Europe because it had better range but that doesn't mean t as a better high altitude aircraft. Also, in the Pacific P-47s escorted B-29s to Japan up until the end of the war. Am I saying that the Jug is the best allied aircraft, no but neither is the P-51. In highest scoring US ace in Europe flew a Jug, the Jug isnt a slouch when it comes to dogfighting.

ZachariasX Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The Tempest seems to be best at about 5500m so it'll be a decent high alt fighter Not at all. The Tempest V was very well liked from tree top up to 3500 meters. Above that it lost much of its competitivness. At 5000 meters many late war planes were fast as well and they didn‘t hit a glass ceiling there. Tempest pilots hatd having to fly escort for bombers and very seldom flew such missions. AFAIR, typical mission parameters were flight to patrol area at about 10‘000 ft, then at 400 mph CAP along the designated waypoints at about 6000 ft.

VesseL Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 P-47, one of my favorite US plane, right after Brewster Buffalo. Im Super exited about it coming to this exellent sim. Happy times ahead, all those iconic planes.
