103rd Aero Squadron USAS posted to the front! RoF/Flying Circus

Gentlemen!

In my excitement at the Flying Circus announcement I'm posting our recruiting thread here to take advantage of the buzz! We currently fly RoF on Monday evening and Thursday evening as well as other times during the week. We expect to continue this into Flying Circus sometime in 2018. Some of us dabble in BoX, but we are primarily a WW1 squadron. We are always on the lookout for USAS enthusiasts!

This is an edited version of my original post in RoF about a year ago:

Introducing the 103rd Aero squadron!

Gentlemen! I’ve noticed a distinct lack of USAS squadrons at the front, so I’ve decided to create one.

So why the 103rd?

I’ve selected the 103rd Aero Squadron for several reasons. First, they are the direct descendant of the Lafayette Escadrille. When the Lafayette Escadrille was disbanded, the American personnel were transferred to the 103rd. This gives the squadron an opportunity to fly earlier war scenarios and still have a historic mount and perspective. Second, the 103rd was the first American squadron to the front and was flying under French command before being moved into the US 2nd and then 3rd Pursuit Group, this gives the 103rd more historic opportunity as well. Thirdly, the 103rd was not a high profile unit like those in the 1st Pursuit group, (94th, 27th, 95th, 147th) but it provided something like 3 out of 4 group commanders and 12 squadron commanders. Last, but not least is that the 103rd has that great Indian Head insignia that looks pretty cool on all our planes.

What will the 103rd look like?

I’m motivated by historic interest first and foremost. (I daresay most folks here are in that boat) I want to recreate the atmosphere of the USAS in RoF & Flying Circus. Considering this, members will hold a particular rank in the squadron and expected to do the job pertaining to their position. Flight leads, section leads, wingmen etc.. all have important jobs to do in a fight and I want to emulate how the USAS operated when we are flying as a group together. This will be part of the website which I created and is linked below.

http://us103.enjin.com/

I'm looking for folks interested in USAS, SPADs need wingmen!

What are the Squadron Aircraft?

  • Nieuport 11
  • Nieuport 17
  • SPAD 7 150 and 180
  • SPAD 13

What is expected of members?

  • Members will be expected to work together and fly together.
  • Members will need to be able to active Teamspeak 3 and use voice comms when flying together whenever possible.
  • Members will be expected to be mature folks who understand real life etc.. (I'm 40)
  • Members will be expected to be proficient and regularly fly our historic squadron aircraft listed below. That is not to say we will be limited to only these, they are just our "squad rides"

Members are encouraged to choose a handle based if at all possible on a USAS pilot of the period. This is just if folks are into the Role Play side and not a hard rule. Mine is US103_Hunter after Frank Hunter who was one of the 103rd squadron aces who went on to command 8th AAF fighters in ww2.

What do I need to do to join?

Go to the website and register, Post here, send me a PM or give a shout in game and we can talk.

S! and see you in the air!

General Orders 13 has been posted!

Welcome to our newest recruit US103_Talbot

Talbot.jpg

US103_Talbot has chosen to commemorate Ralph Talbot who flew DH-4s with the USMC flight in northern Fracne. We made an exception to our historical representation rules do to the pilots background.

"A participant in numerous raids into enemy territory, Second Lieutenant Talbot was attacked by nine Luftstreitkräfte enemy scouts while on such a raid over Belgium, October 8, 1918, and in the ensuing fight shot down one of his attackers. Six days later, while on a strike against an enemy ammunition depot at Pittem, he and another plane became detached from the formation due to motor trouble and were attacked by 12 enemy scouts. In the fight which followed, his plane shot down one of the enemy scouts before his observer, Gunnery Sergeant Robert G. Robinson, was shot and the gun jammed. Talbot maneuvered the DeHavilland to gain time while Robinson cleared the gun, then rejoined the battle. Robinson kept on firing until he collapsed from two more wounds. Talbot continued alone, shot down another enemy plane, then dived to escape the remaining Fokker D.VII fighters. Crossing the German trenches at 50 feet, he kept his ship with its failing motor in the air until he reached the nearest hospital where he landed, delivered Robinson to medical personnel and returned to his aerodrome.

Second Lieutenant Talbot died on October 25, 1918, when his DH-4 crashed on takeoff, during an engine test flight, at La Fresne aerodrome."

The 103rd is more active then ever, taking the fight to the hun every week! We are recruiting active pilots to join the USAS! We train constantly to improve our abilities whether you are a vet or a new player.

Here is a short film US103_Larner put together for me. A pair of 3rd Flight SPADs racked up 12 kills in a little less then two hours over the front.
