69th_chuter Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Because the zoomed view is the more realistic view but there isn't enough peripheral vision so the developers let you pull the view back to have a more useful FOV? 2
Dakpilot Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Look at it from a different perspective, Full zoom in, is the level of detail that normal eyesight is capable of seeing, technology and cost of technology limits this level of detail to a very small narrow field of view, so we are actually given the option to 'zoom' out for a more correct field of view with less detail. Restricting the zoom would be like all pilots flying around with very poor eyesight and very unrealistic when trying to simulate real flying/combat, so a compromise is allowed (zoom) . Banning zoom would be less "full real" and actually more gamey regards simulation of combat techniques and real world vision capability (before you even consider game rendering limitations) Cheers Dakpilot 1

Certain resolution and screen size combinations push this way beyond realistic. Even on my monitor, fully zoomed in; my holographic sight and everything else in the cockpit is way bigger than it was in real life. Edited November 5, 2017 by hrafnkolbrandr 1
Yogiflight Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Certain resolution and screen size combinations push this way beyond realistic. Even on my monitor, fully zoomed in; my holographic sight and everything else is way bigger than it was in real life. This! Fully zoomed on my 42" screen, is like using binoculars. So it very much depends on how big is your screen. When you fly with a 27" monitor, there surely is no way around using zoom.
blitze Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Yes, Full real servers have to deal with us lesser people who fly online with small monitors. We trade FOV for short term zoom so we can try to Id targets and not shoot the wrong ones. Not so effective for me in my case but them the problems with sub 40Inch screens or VR.
Field-Ops Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Same with my 42, and is why I made the last topic about this. I was exploring the possibility of having the server be able to limit the use of the zoom feature but it becomes a hardware and playability issue for people with smaller screens.
Lensman Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 In VR I can see, without moving my head, the top bar of the canopy, the front side windows of the canopy (peripheral vision), the entire instrument panel at the front and as far (in a 109).as the flap wheel on the left (and equivalent right), the stick and the pedals ... Again, that's without moving my head and is the view a pilot would have in reality. Therefore anything enabling the same fov in 2D is entirely accurate.
