madcowz Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Hi, new here but I have searched here and in Google but haven't been able to find an answer.I'm trying to get my head round navigating and have noticed that the in-game map doesn't match community made maps. For example, I'm trying the mission: BOS - Take-off and landing, cross wind and it is using the airfield called Lapino. On the in-game map I see the grid numbers 0303 and 0404 (see screenshot) But when I look on http://il2missionplanner.com/ grids 0303 and 0404 look completely different. Am I doing something daft? Thanks.
xvii-Dietrich Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Are you looking at the same maps? If you go to http://il2missionplanner.com/ the default map is Stalingrad. Click on the small gear-symbol in the lower right (it is just above the question mark) to open up the options. Then use the drop down menu to select the correct map. 1
madcowz Posted November 2, 2017 Author Posted November 2, 2017 Are you looking at the same maps? Good call, but AFAIK, yes I am. The mission is in the BOS list and the other maps look even less like what I see in-game.
THERION Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Hi these are two different maps - the first one shows the Lapino map, the other one is actually the Stalingrad map. As far as I know, the Lapino map is a 3rd party map and is not selectable in http://il2missionplanner.com. Cheers

So I assume that any number of these standard missions could be using this map and I wouldn't know? I will go back to failing at the campaigns so I can at least use the 3rd party tool on an ipad. Thanks for your reply. I was wondering if I was being stoopit and missing something obvious.
curiousGamblerr Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 ... As far as I know, the Lapino map ... is not selectable in http://il2missionplanner.com. ... This is true. I never added Lapino because it was so small. The mission planner has Stalingrad, Moscow, V. Luki and Kuban though.
-TBC-AeroAce Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Im sure at some point they changed the grid reference system. So u may be looking at an old map.

I thought of that too, but they changed from a 3 to 4 digit grid system, and we see 4 digits in both screenshots. The mission planner is using up to date maps to match the game. I'm pretty sure Lapino map is actually a subset of Stalingrad map, with a it's own grid system, and that's part of the confusion. 1

Is Lapino a real area though? As in... do the towns on the Lapino map exist in real life? I has always thought that it was simply a made-up test map, a bit like "Inspiration Island" in Rise of Flight. The idea of it was to try out the map technology... back in the days before even the Stalingrad map existed.

My impression that it was a subset was based on something I read forever ago- you could be right. 1

The towns are arbitrary, but the rivers and forest features match exactly. Thanks! 1
