GridiroN Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 In this "random highlights" clip, it's just a quick showcase of the La-5F. It's my first go with the new La-5F which I usually skip because it's only available in competition with the Yak-1B which is my favourite mount to actually fight in. The last clip showcases a dogfight against BraveSirRobin; I ultimately lose in the end, but it was one of the funnest fights I've had! 2
Dave Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Nice ride. But man ... that wing-line overshoot (which you really could see coming for a while) followed by an action replay of the same mistake only seconds later OK - I'm being an ass.

Hey, I did say I was no good in the La5. lol. You had your chances nevertheless. I hit him several times. He told me later they did no damage though.
Dave Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Hey, I did say I was no good in the La5. lol. Yeah. Have you ever watched a formula thriller, screaming at the screen "No not that way ... no nooooooo!"?
JG27*Kornezov Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 (edited) The FW 190 pilot was as good as it could possibly be S!. Briefly that was excellent FW flying. For me the biggest mistake was at 11:53 you placed yourself in front of him. You have as good roll rate as he has, so why you let him create lateral separation, stay behind him. Even if the stats tell that the FW190 has a better turn rate, I think that still La5 has the advantage of low speed handling. Actually you won the turn fight. I am not an expert by any means of those planes but you should refer to Rambo style of maneuvering to get the best. Edited November 2, 2017 by JG27_Kornezov

I am not an expert by any means of those planes but you should refer to Rambo style of maneuvering to get the best. I won the turn, but it cost me all my energy. His horizontal speed cancelled it out; I didn't have the speed to use it, and I eventually just fell out of the sky as you saw. His hits did little to damage me. It was mostly a mistake of technique. As I've said, I am very amateur in the La5. I don't really know how to use it other than that it's roll rate is good. Reading up on the airframe, sources claim it's vertical elevators were weak, which does appear to be simulated in-sim properly. It costs a lot of energy to turn fight in my experience. I'd say the FW190 is actually better at turn fighting than the La5 is.
ShamrockOneFive Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 Great video GridiroN! The La-5 has decent elevator authority but the weight of the aircraft and consequently the wingloading is a bit of an issue. It's why you bleed speed and fall out of the sky so quickly. The La-5FN that we're getting will have more engine power with less weight and lower wing loading bringing the turn down into the range of the Yak series and making it by far a better dogfighter. Still... La-5 is fast and rolls well so you can use that to your advantage. Good fun man! Keep on sharing those videos!
