Bombing subs with just the periscope exposed...

...anyone tried it yet?

Results?

I'm working on a mission and would rather not take the time to test this right now. :)

It worked in RoF, don't see why it wouldn't still work.

I didn't want to assume.

I have my head down on the build and didn't want to waste time testing this...but you're right, no reason to think it doesn't work still.

In BOS, there are no bomber planes with periscopes.

Say what?

How do you think the ventral gun on the Pe-2 is aimed?

Sheer force of will and generally suicidal tendencies.

Ive done it (mission almost done).

Using Bf110 and two 500 bombs.

You can kill the guns on the subs but i haven't managed to take out the sub entirely.

the water surface needs to be reworked in order we be able to see underwater, a sub a periscope depth is clearly visible from the air

The top one is a Los Angeles class SSN in the Arabian Sea, or at least somewhere with very clear water. Somewhere where the water is more opaque in cloudy weather you'd struggle to spot one from the air. I've no idea what the Black Sea is like.

I've put together some logic in the editor that causes a sub to submerge on its own when an enemy gets close enough. Pretty cool - I need to make some adjustments still when I have time.

This is why I was curious about damage while it's submerged.

The water appears to be layered - a base layer and a "sea state" layer with a procedurally animated displacement/normal map on the latter - both with no Y dimension and both opaque. Making either/both translucent wound cause a whole other level of design complexity it appears.

Refraction being one, but the visibility of the base layer being another.

The sea would have to be one 3D object with subsurface scattering and refraction, with the animated 'sea state' to boot. Basically a load of processing power compared to the current version.

Who knows what's in the works for later.

I agree it would be nice to see the effect illustrated above - just not sure how plausible that would be.

I think you ought to let the devs decide what is possible, or not.

Just stick to whether or not you think it would add to the immersion of a upcoming theater with nothing but water for the most part.

...and who is saying otherwise exactly?

Are you their caretaker?

Is it up to you to tell others what they should "stick to"?

Gambit has shown patience and friendliness with his fellow forum posters (me, for example). Perhaps you could learn from his example. ;)

Sub now submerging when an enemy gets close, and surfacing when all clear.

Pretty cool.

What use does a bulletproof AI aimbot have for a periscope?

Actually there are so many games that use translucent water, ArmA 3, War Thunder, World of Warships, GTA, Fall out and many others, maybe in the future we can have it too in BoX series, and will be a really needed feature in the pacific theatre where most of the map is water

I don't doubt it, but they're working within their own proprietary engine and it's current capabilities.

With enough money you can do anything.

I have not yet personally tried to bomb a sub at periscope depth - but from  my experiments so far it seems that AI planes and ships don't see them at that depth, even if really close, and consequently don't even try to attack. Can someone confirm? Any ideas for a possible workaround in the editor?

I wonder if that happens in the Career campaign now on Kuban?
