Jade_Monkey Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 Just found this which is barely on topic: The full article in the RPS Flare path post: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/11/10/the-flare-path-never-mind-the-rollocks/ 1
ZachariasX Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 The Cub... one of the greatest aircraft ever!
sniperton Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 You want me to commit seppuku Dietrich ? Floatplane maniacs ... Don't do that. We'd all die on mourning you. The Catalina is a must, the rest can rest.
Feathered_IV Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 A bit Rich don't you think ? Making a tactical choice, radio or no radio, but hey I can still talk to all my buddies anyway, so all pluses and no minuses. Well, I recall Sakai and some other pilots writing about how they ditched the radios to save weight, and 42kg as Hiro says is a significant amount for a zero. Plus, the AI radio speech in this series is so underdeveloped and perfectly irritating that it would be nice to turn it off.
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 It's about 1.7 % of total weight. I dont know how much it would affect flying characteristics. It would certainly free some space in cockpit so you can move more comfortably ... Plus, the AI radio speech in this series is so underdeveloped and perfectly irritating that it would be nice to turn it off. Well, that makes it valid then. I concur, radio chatter in series is not fun.
HagarTheHorrible Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 (edited) Well, I recall Sakai and some other pilots writing about how they ditched the radios to save weight, and 42kg as Hiro says is a significant amount for a zero. Plus, the AI radio speech in this series is so underdeveloped and perfectly irritating that it would be nice to turn it off. I'm sure you're right but dropping the radio, to make the aircraft more competitive, is a bit silly if players can still use TS, Discord or some other "radio" program. Maybe I'm the only one, but I tend to leave the A.I to their own devices and hope they follow my lead and even if and when I do ask them to do something specific it's not guaranteed that they won't ignore me anyway. As to following what the A.I are telling me, in Japanese, is probably more than I can spare time or consideration for. it.s nice scene setting but to be honest they may as well be asking me the directions to Edinburgh Zoo. xvii-Dietrich Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 Nice! Of course the Do-24 makes perfect sense. a) You get those Dutch markings. That's a nation we've not seen officially represented in BoX yet. b) You get Australia markings. Ditto. c) You get a plane that can be used on the Eastern Front and the Pacific. Win-win. d) You get a transporter. Heavy use was made of the Do-24 for the Kuban evacuation. e) It is a perfect recon aircraft f) Ideal for air-sea rescue. g) Another tri-motor h) It is classier than the PBY. Of course, Hiromachi will freak out. Speaking of whom... You want me to commit seppuku Dietrich ? No, don't do that. Much better would be to just bail out somewhere over water and we'll come a rescue you... with a seaplane. Floatplane maniacs ...
Hirachi Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 The only flying boat we need in the Pacific
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 (edited) I was with you until.........................h) It is classier than the PBY. and then I died. Edited November 12, 2017 by II/JG17_HerrMurf
Field-Ops Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 Oh man, if only the Devs could do a 4 engined plane for the pacific. The H6k would fit so well and compliment the Catalina the best.
Mesha44 Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 I'm actually wondering if they will give us F4F-3 and F4F-4 via the modifications panel. It's a big modification I suppose as the F4F-3 is lighter (no retracting wings). There aren't very many other options for that aircraft. It was a purpose built model with little in the way of options and I don't even think the pilots had much say in things like armor plate modifications or the like. The only other F4F type I know is the F4F-3a, which had a slightly less powerful engine. There was one experimental XF4F-4 that was part of one of the fighter squadrons, it was a test of the folding wing design, but I don't know if it was flown during the Battle of Midway. As far as I know the only Wildcat at the Battle was the F4F-4, all others types having be swapped out at that point. I try to post the general make up of the squadrons later, it is all given in great detail in The First Team, Pacific Naval Air Combat from Pearl Harbor to Midway – John B. Lundstrom
Gambit21 Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 The Emily is a dream of mine, but I'm almost positive we'll never see it.
[CPT]milopugdog Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 A dream of mine is to be able to spawn cruiser or battleship borne fighters and recon aircraft. I feel it's an area that's overlooked in favor of carrier aircraft. 3

[CPT]milopugdog Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 Don´t forget submarine borne planes! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-400-class_submarine I never knew they actually built a few of those. Wouldn't be as cool since the aircraft were there just to do kamikaze attacks though.
BlitzPig_EL Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 In the month of September, 1942, a Kugisho E14Y "Glen" float plane launched from Japanese submarine I-25, and piloted by Warrant Officer Nobuo Fujita made two separate incendiary bomb attacks on the forests in the state of Oregon on the US Pacific coast, in an effort to start forest fires. The plan failed as the forests were too wet, but none the less, these were the only bombing attacks directly on the US mainland during WW2. 1
Stig Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 The First Team, Pacific Naval Air Combat from Pearl Harbor to Midway – John B. Lundstrom Just in the process of reading this now, it's very good. One particular gem on p. 91 evoked a quiet chuckle: 'Five miles (10,000 yards) was about the limit at which a fighter pilot could spot an incoming plane.' That's probably for another thread, I guess.
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 I'm going through the "The First Team and the Guadalcanal Campaign. Naval Fighter Combat from August to November 1942" and found an even better quote: "The Navy is unable to meet this rate of attrition and continue to operate carriers." I wonder if anyone can guess who said that ?
busdriver Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 (edited) The Emily is a dream of mine... I dream of a younger version of myself with the current version of Rose...Rose Leslie. OT: Reading a new book, Pacific Thunder by Thomas Cleaver whilst referencing Japanese Naval Air Force Units & Their Aces, 1932-1945 for the enemy's POV. Cleaver's level of detail is not like John Lundstrom but his work is a nice overview. Edited November 13, 2017 by busdriver

xvii-Dietrich Posted November 17, 2017 Posted November 17, 2017 Beautiful aircraft. But the Pacific and its seaplanes are so very far away now. 1
=gRiJ=Alado Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 But the Pacific and its seaplanes are so very far away now cancelled?????
Bommel Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 cancelled????? Postponed! Read yesterday´s Major Announcement.
Zirashi Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 (edited) cancelled????? They decided to shift to the 1944-1945 Western European front. We're getting Doras and Mustangs instead of Zeros and Wildcats. They are also planning on bringing bi-planes in and working more on tanks going into 2018. Basically, it will probably be at least 2019 before they go back to the Pacific. On the bright side, one of the planes planned is the P-38, so we're still getting something used in the Pacific I suppose. Plus the planned plane set is bound to bring in some more of the US and Western European audience. At first I was bummed out, then I saw the projected plane set and am totally fine with the shift. Can't wait to fly P-51Ds and Bf 109 K-4s in this game engine. Hopefully we get a few more dedicated bombers though. Everything on the list aside from AI flown B-25s is a fighter. The Allies could probably just use the P-38L and P-47 as fighter-bombers, but the Axis have no real equal, unless you count the 190A-8 as equal to the P-47 when it comes to ground attack capability (I personally don't think they're even in the same league). https://il2sturmovik.com/news/360/announcing-battle-bodenplatte-flying-circus-tank-c/ Edited November 18, 2017 by Zirashi
=gRiJ=Alado Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I like new planes and maps in europe, but i would like more take off and land in carriers and pacifics maps
