[KG]Destaex Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Hi Guys, Just looking into playing this game again - I originally pre-ordered but could not play it due to my ear problems. Loud droning engine noises with the sharp frequency highs set off my tinnitus (my ears ring from inside my skull). Plently of people have this problem. Especially old vets and people who have been around loud noises - like aircraft - all their lives. Last time I played I could not find where to turn down just the engine sound or take the sharpness off it. Leaving the rest higher to allow me to function in game. This forces me to play with all sounds down to almost zero. I just loaded war thunder to see if their simulation mode might work for me. Noticed it had an engine sound bar AND a specific tinnitus sound bar. Has il2 BOS come as far as this yet or do they have plans to do thier sound in a more advanced way. For a simulator with so many complexities for other things it is surprising that the interface/game settings for sound are so basic. In DCS I use a setting that puts me inside a headset muffling the sound of the engine. This works well. I am hoping CLOD when it is revised also has these tinnitus settings. 3
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 If you've been serving this is also true. I agree that the selection is needed, just as a colour contrast/vibrance bar in graphical options.
Finkeren Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 I hope there os something that can be done about this, but simply an option to turn down engine sound is not a solution, since the engine sound will just be replaced by wind noise and turning both of them down is a huge exploit that will allow players in MP a kind of “radar”, warning them, that an enemy is sneaking up on them. This happened a lot in IL2-1946. 1

Finkeren Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Unless no sound from the outside is heard from inside the cockpit as in real life ... sound mod could be the solution The only reason no sound is heard from the outside is because the noise of the engine and airflow drowns it out. If you remove those two, you can hear absolutely everything, especially from a standard not-very-tightly sealed WW2 cockpit. If you’ve ever flown in a hot air balloon, you’ll know just how far sound travels, when you remove wind noise and engine from an aircraft.

Exact and that's why you should not hear anything from the cockpit when you're when you're flying. On the ground, engine off and zero speed, cockpit closed we must hear the sounds muffled and open cokpit, the normal sound. There is a parameter which manages very good in FMOD and which is called "the occlusion of the sound" ...
yeikov Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 (edited) To the OP, have you tried an external application to filter/equalize/muffle the sound at system level? I don't know if and which one would work, but a quick search gave this one: https://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/?source=directory You may also have equalizing options in your soundcard driver. Again, I don't know if that'd work, but I hope you can get something. Edited October 29, 2017 by yeikov
[KG]Destaex Posted October 29, 2017 Author Posted October 29, 2017 Hi yeikov. I did think of that but really don't want to go that far if possible. Because my sound card is one of those with a ridiculously problematic and unintuitive driver set. I stick to the default windows drivers for it for this reason. I also don't want global windows changes. Because it is just this game that is a problem...no others I play have this high pitched drone.

You can take these out with a low-pass set on top, by running it through that filter, and easily mostly get rid of the issue. But it takes an acoustic professional to properly do this. If the dev team doesn't have one, maybe we can get people to act within the community? Can we do some research crowd style ? We need to know A) to which frequencies the sound most get cut B) is there a program that can act as low-pass to filter out frequencies of sound files you can put through it?
[KG]Destaex Posted October 29, 2017 Author Posted October 29, 2017 (edited) I appreciate all the responses though. Comparison of Sound Settings in ww2 Simulations I own: War Thunder DCS CLoD il2 BOS Edited October 29, 2017 by [KG]Destaex
=RvE=Windmills Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Would be great to have something like this, most engine sounds aren't that bad but the DB engines are horrible. They have this high pitched shrill sound to them that is really bad compared to the low droning sound of most other engines. Also the I16 with its constant wind is not all that pleasant either.
