Return to base command no longer working as of update 2.012

The command for AI wingmen to return to base is no longer capable of being given. This is the case when using both the command menu and hotkeys. It is currently impossible to dismiss AI wingmen.

That is odd, flying SP is all I have been doing and I have not run across that.

Are you sure you are the flight leader when you are giving the commands? If you are not the flight leader then they will not have any effect.
